Not sure if a local instance of a bouncer is what I want, advice? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joekamelhome · 2013-09-04 23:24 Hey everyone. Just looking for some advice on how I can do something (or if it's possible). Occasionally, I'll be in conversation with someone or in channel and want to head outside for a smoke since I don't smoke in the house. There are times however where you don't want to break out of a conversation and then rejoin after five minutes or whatever. What I'd like to be able to do is essentially go from my PC to my phone, and use the phone's IRC client to connect in and take over the session, and then go back to my pc when I'm done. It looks like irssi's built in proxy would allow that, but I'd like to stay with something GUI based - I've been using KVIrc for about 5 years now. Also, I am running Windows, though I could load this on my house server which is running Cent 6 if the only options are Linux based. Thanks. **EDIT: Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I set ZNC and everything has been running just like I had hoped.** A few minor things here and there, but that's always the case. So far, very happy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- netrixtardis · 2013-09-05 00:54 I'm sorry, but if you can't leave your computer for 5 minutes, a bouncer is not your issue..... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rOOb85 · 2013-09-05 00:58 I'd personally just setup znc (a awesome irc bouncer) on the home server or a dedicated server if you have acccess to one. Then all your clients can connect to that and you can maintain the illusion of not leaving when u go out for a smoke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- o24 · 2013-09-05 01:27 Yep, install ZNC on your server and connect from anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joekamelhome · 2013-09-05 01:30 Well it all depends on cause. It isn't that I want to be *always* connected. It's just there are times when you might be in a discussion where it is better to not be disconnected. Either due to interrupting the flow of the conversation, thought processes involved, or maybe you're just doing your fantasy hockey draft and don't want to miss your spot in the draft order. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- takennickname · 2013-09-05 09:30 ZNC is what you want. It let's multiple clients connect to the same account. I would gona step further and put it on an always on vps or something. So worth it if you use IRC a lot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- operating_bastard · 2013-09-05 09:41 I do this with like five connections, all running through znc on my vps. Once you get znc up and running it has a gui. As for running on your home centbox, I could too, but I pay $5 a month for a vps through digitalocean, and this allows me to have a little more anonymity on irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teklord · 2013-09-05 18:03 ssh + tmux + weechat Run your IRC client (weechat) inside of a tmux session, and access it from anywhere in the world via ssh. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tabulasomnia · 2013-09-06 10:37 IRCCloud is a solution for this.
