Best way to hide my IP over IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-21 21:46 I searched this sub in order to get info about this, but just found this [two posts](http://www.reddit.com/r/irc/search?q=hide+ip&restrict_sr=on) and did not help me. I've tried using Proxies and VPNs, but neither worked. They will detect them or would work for like 5min and then got kicked. Also I dont want to register my nick name because I don't want to always use the same and I want this to work in every sever. TOR and I2P are not working also, so I don't know what else to try. Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2013-08-21 21:52 Maybe don't care? I don't bother hiding mine, and if you get DDoSed, you're probably in the wrong crowd. It just doesn't matter. If you care enough, register. And remember, netops can see your IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zarthus · 2013-08-21 22:07 if TOR, proxies, VPNs and BNCs don't work you're just on the wrong network. Although I'm with /u/localtoast about not caring, if you're worried about ddosed - you're meeting the wrong channel and/or people. Keep in mind there are thousands of others who don't mask their IP and are still doing fine - Why should you not be? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cheez0r · 2013-08-21 22:21 Get a shell and use it for irssi or BNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-21 23:50 Well every network I try either kicks me or bans me, also I'm not worried about DDoS I'm more worried about being doxed, tracked or related to my IRL persona. Thanks for your reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-21 23:51 More info about that? Thanks BTW. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-21 23:53 I care, a lot... I don't want to be doxed nor even to tell where I'm from. What is that with everyone claiming ''If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry''. It's just a matter of privacy and security. but thanks anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cheez0r · 2013-08-21 23:55 A shell is a server that runs on the Internet which allows you to SSH in and do things. You can use it to run the command-line IRC client 'irssi', or you can use it to run a BNC. Companies like [sh3lls.net](http://www.sh3lls.net) offer shells at as low as $1/mo, or you can use something like AWS (Amazon Web Services) if you don't mind administering your own machine. * [egghelp.org shell readme](http://www.egghelp.org/shell.htm) * [Another explanation](http://superuser.com/questions/250539/how-do- irc-clients-shells-and-bouncers-work) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Holoscope · 2013-08-21 23:56 PanicBNC is a good, free BNC. Basically, you have a bot running and logged in as you. You connect to the BNC instead of the server, making the bot into a sort of proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rOOb85 · 2013-08-21 23:57 You can buy a shell account for relatively cheap and then run a irc bouncer aka BNC such as znc (google this). This way the bnc will actually connect to the irc server with your shell accounts ip. Then in your irc client instead of connecting to the irc server you connect to your bnc. This also lets your nickname be on irc 24/7 and you wont miss messages As far as irssi, irssi is a command line irc client that you can use when you ssh into your shell provider. Combine irssi/weechat with screen/tmux and you have a irc client running 24/7 that you can access from anywhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2013-08-22 00:09 An IP can be inaccurate - it can represent multiple people, show wrong geographic information, and unless you have a static IP with filled out whois info, it only resolves to your ISP's closest DSLAM/whatever. Your IP does not represent you. And if you're getting doxed, chances are you were asking for it, pissed someone off, or shit like that. Someone would actually need to care. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-22 02:27 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2013-08-22 11:41 Freenode allows you to connect via tor. Check out detaila on their site ---------------------------------------------------------------------- threeLetterMeyhem · 2013-08-22 15:13 >unless you have a static IP with filled out whois info, it only resolves to your ISP's closest DSLAM/whatever. Typically your DHCP lease is unique to your account (not very many ISPs NAT customers together...) will last at least a few days, and if you have a device that is constantly on (like a wireless router...) it will keep renewing the DHCP lease for months on end (until you need to reboot that router). A non-static IP is much stickier than you probably realize, and I could think of lots of ways to do damage given a particular someone's active IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-23 06:08 Really appreciated! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-23 06:08 I will check it out, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-23 06:09 Interesting, going to spend some time on it, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-23 06:17 Well that shows my current city, that is enough free information for me. Also I need to use static IPs, believe me there is a lot of people the could dox you if they can, and I don't always want to be a lurker, a secure way to exchange information is always welcome. And IRC its very cool and dynamic, I really like it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HerrTesla · 2013-08-23 06:18 > and I could think of lots of ways to do damage given a particular someone's active IP. And I don't even want to give it a try... ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2013-08-23 11:11 If you meet those kind of people, you are probably in the wrong places. Many people just don't give a shit. If you're that paranoid, register an account. If you went through effort of using a VPN/Tor/etc, you can register an account on every network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ta1901 · 2013-09-05 14:02 Free unix shell: sdf.lonestar.org Use your browser to go there first, sign up, and read what you get for free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TehMushy · 2013-09-09 19:22 I use ZNC on my own server and it works well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jota87r · 2013-09-26 17:55 http://freenode.net/irc_servers.shtml#tor ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theMAFIAAway · 2013-09-29 22:15 You need to create an account before using Tor and that defeats the purpose, at least for newbies.
