Prevent client from showing up on whois? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-16 16:39 I'm not sure why it comes up, but when I do a whois on myself, I get this as part of the output: (~weechat@somedomain): weechat What exactly is this, and how do I prevent it from happening? Very new to the irc game, so wanting to learn what all this stuff is and means. Thanks in advance ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arilotter · 2013-08-16 20:01 weechat is setting itself as your "realname". if there's no option for it, get a better client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- trua · 2013-08-16 20:02 Unless you are on a weird network with some kind of non-standard extensions to the way whois works, the name of the client software is not information that is included. The "~weechat@" part is what's called your [ident](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ident_protocol), and is either directly your Unix username passed through to the IRC server or a value set by your IRC client. This looks like weechat is setting your ident to "weechat" by default. I'm not completely sure what the second occurrence of "weechat" is, but my guess is your "real name" or "ircname" is also by default set to "weechat". Note that even if you set these options to other values, you can still find out what client software someone is using by sending a [CTCP VERSION](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Client-to- client_protocol#VERSION) request. That is, unless the user blocks those requests or sets their client to not respond. In weechat, it looks like you can set the VERSION reply string to empty with this command: **/set irc.ctcp.version ""** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2013-08-16 20:15 There is: /set irc.server_default.realname "whatever you want as gecos/realname" and: /set irc.server_default.username "YourIdent" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FiXato · 2013-08-16 20:23 Have a look at the official [WeeChat Quickstart documentation](http:// www.weechat.org/files/doc/stable/weechat_quickstart.en.html#irc_server _options): > To set username and realname: > > /set irc.server.oftc.username "My user name" > /set irc.server.oftc.realname "My real name" Where _'oftc'_ is the specific saved server's name. The defaults are stored under _irc.server_default.*_ settings: /set irc.server_default.username "YourIdent" /set irc.server_default.realname "whatever you want as default gecos/realname" I would suggest you get the iset.pl script (_/script install iset.pl_) and then use: /iset irc.server* to review all your server settings _(along with help info describing each setting)_ and change the ones you want to use non-default values.
