ELI5: Bouncers reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-13 17:08 Can someone exlpain to me what bouncers are? Are they better than simply using a proxy? Why/Why not? Is it a paid for service? etc. I've been looking to get into more IRC lately, but have yet to wrap my head around bouncers. Thanks in advance for the help ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aMunster · 2013-08-13 19:04 Rather than connecting from PC -> IRC server, it goes in this order: PC -> Bouncer -> IRC server. There are a few reasons for this: * Privacy * Always connected to server. * You can run IRC bots if you want. Are they better than simply using a proxy? Yes, if you have a flaky internet connection or need more strict privacy. Are bouncers a paid service? The software tends to be free, but running it on a remote server can sometimes cost money. I don't use a bouncer. Instead I run my IRC client, irssi, on a server rather than at home. The effect is the same. I connect to it via SSH. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WOFall · 2013-08-13 20:01 In practical terms, when you "quit" irc, your bouncer stays connected to the server. This means that people aren't annoyed by any join/part spam you'd otherwise generate*, and that when you reconnect you can have a playback (configurable) of what you missed while you were gone. While irssi/shell hosts tend to be paid, you can usually find free bouncers; although privacy may be a concern. \* Although I think this is a strange mentality for people to have. ur spamming up my screen, use screen/bnc so perhaps you should turn off join/part notices? but then I can't tell when someone leaves[!](http://ragecollection.com/img/ragefaces/variations/harp- darp-angry.png) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnStrangerGalt · 2013-08-13 22:23 Well if you leave and join several times a minute, yes it can get very annoying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-14 00:24 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aMunster · 2013-08-14 00:58 You can set vhosts on bouncers to mask your home ip address. In the event the vhost isn't working, the bouncer isn't located at home, so your address would never be revealed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-14 01:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaax · 2013-08-14 03:29 Can somebody recommend a bouncer service in europe? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2013-08-14 06:01 They prevent people who are too intoxicated or underage from going to age-restricted events and deal with people who have been ejected from the venue for inciting violence or getting too drunk. As for an IRC bouncer, well, it does exactly what it says on the tin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2013-08-14 16:31 Get a free Amazon EC2 micro instance running Linux and run znc on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- enfield12 · 2013-08-14 16:32 Get a shell account from sh3lls.net or get a cheap vps and setup a znc or psybnc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-14 17:55 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2013-08-14 18:29 Amazon AWS may be a bit too hard to figure out in that case. It would be easier to start off with a Linux VPS from somewhere else, but it won't be free. Rackspace Cloud Servers are a bit more, but I recommend it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-08-15 11:38 [deleted]
