How to make your IP a website instead of numbers for IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AwsomeG2 · 2013-03-27 06:03 I am running a bot on a VPS and I would like to have it show as bot.example.com instead of 123.456.789 , I already own a few websites and I have seen other people do this for their IRC bots. Does anyone know how it's done? Or can link me to how to do it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lpiob · 2013-03-27 06:40 You have to set up a reverse-dns record for that IP adress. You shoud be able to do this after contacting your VPS provider. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rgzzo · 2013-03-27 07:28 And it is called ['host name'](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostname) not 'website'. Check your VPS provider's web panel and found something called 'revDNS' or 'PTR record' or 'Reverse record'. Then you have to get a hostname for it, assign this hostname to your IP and then in the panel assign this hostname to the IP address. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KnightHawk3 · 2013-03-27 07:55 Why not just use a vhost? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- o24 · 2013-03-27 09:19 The solution is a vhost in this situation. Most example.com hosts are scrambled by default anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2013-03-27 13:14 The other answers here are mostly right but are missing a key point. The PTR (reverse DNS) record for the IP address must be set to the hostname you want to appear as your host on IRC *and* there must be a matching A record pointing back to that IP address. Only the person who controls the IP address (in this case the VPS provider) can change the PTR record. You can likely change the A record for your domain, assuming you own the domain and have access to change its DNS records. For example: * You have a website, awesomeg2.com and you have a VPS on 12.34.56.78 * You can point the A record for awesomeg2.com and www.awesomeg2.com to 12.34.56.78, set up a web server on your VPS and your site will work (probably already done this bit). * You then set up an A record for look.at.my.awesome.host.awesomeg2.com to 12.34.56.78, you can optionally set up a website for that domain as well. * You then ask the VPS company to change the PTR (reverse DNS) record for 12.34.56.78 to look.at.my.awesome.host.awesomeg2.com. * At this point both your website will work, and when you connect to any IRC server from your VPS you'll have the host of nick!ident@look.at.my.awesome.host.awesomeg2.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- twodayslate · 2013-03-27 15:37 Set an ANAME http://help.dnsmadeeasy.com/records/aname-record/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2013-03-27 22:29 There's no such thing mentioned in the DNS RFCs; it looks like a DNS Made Easy-only extension, and either way it's intended to solve the perceived limitations of CNAME records, which is completely unrelated to what OP wants in the first place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- max_cavalera · 2013-03-27 23:39 vhost vhost vhost vhost ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rickibalboa · 2013-05-10 12:41 No idea why this is getting voted down? A load of networks have obfuscating on hostnames ip addresses anyway. And RDNS isn't always a viable solution, plenty of hosts don't use it. Try RDNS, if not. Register the nickname and request a vhost (most networks allow this)
