Which ircd to run? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gowahoo · 2013-03-11 18:43 I would like to run ircd on one of my own servers (running latest FC), just for our internal stuff so under 10 users. I think the priority would be security since the box in question is connected to the internet and not so much irc admin side since we expect well behaved users (friends and coworkers). I saw the wikipedia article that [compares all the ircds](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison\_of\_ Internet\_Relay\_Chat\_daemons) but I feel like this is total overload of information and I still can't decide! For those of you who run their own, how did you pick? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prothid · 2013-03-11 19:23 We use ircu on our network (GameSurge). We built our services (srvx) for it and our lead developer is an ircu maintainer as well. Most of these are built for larger scale networks. I haven't seen OfficeIRC Server before, and don't really like that it's written in VB, but the feature set looks good for what you'll use it for. If you want a safe bet, go with something like Hybrid (IRCD-Hybrid). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctrlx0 · 2013-03-11 19:38 I vote for unreal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GuestOne · 2013-03-11 20:02 InspIRCd http://inspircd.github.com/ the most complete. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- o24 · 2013-03-11 20:03 Unreal++ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-03-11 20:14 First off, what server specs are you running the ircd off of? Operating system? Hardware specs? Connection? Firewall Limitations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2013-03-11 21:07 One of the most updated and well designed is charybdis and the atheme services, they personally get my vote at the moment. IRCu (or the QuakeNet fork, snircd) is a good bet if you're expecting to host a large network, although I'm a QuakeNet developer so I probably would say that. Due to multiple design choices and other issues I'd avoid Unreal even if it's "easy". Avoid older services (such as "services for IRC networks") as they are buggy and have security problems. QuakeNet, Undernet and GameSurge all use IRCu or a fork of IRCu, freenode uses a fork of charybdis. Charybdis was originally based on ratbox, which is used by EFnet. That list alone covers most of the most popular or largest IRC networks around, which is likely why sensible people will advise you pick one of them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- graham_king · 2013-03-11 21:14 I've used ircd-hybrid happily. It's very easy to set up. I can't comment on security as it was local only. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- habys · 2013-03-11 21:51 http://rabbit.dereferenced.org/~nenolod/ASA-2012-12-31.txt just make sure you keep it updated.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2013-03-11 22:33 Sure, however all the major IRCd's have had 0day remote crashes, it was patched pretty quickly too. IRCu and snird had one some years ago, Unreal even shipped with malware embedded in it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pacmanlives · 2013-03-11 23:46 InspIRCd I hear is good. I managed an unrealircd server about 10 years ago with a few thousand users on a server. Its easy to setup. Depending on your need, if a corp env you might want to look at a jabber client too as they are easy to integrate with ldap servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- arcalion · 2013-03-12 00:37 We've used a small internal server at work for a few years now...We started out with ratbox because it supported SSL and webirc spoofing (this is a feature that allows you to set up a web client, like qwebirc, to connect to your server and have the clients show up as their actual IP and not the IP of the webserver). Ultimately we switched to bahamut after the 0-day vulnerability in ratbox - by that time bahamut supported SSL and webirc functionality, and our non-irc- savvy unix team felt it was a bit easier to configure/setup/run than ratbox. I'm sure there are plenty who would disagree with that, but...there you have it. Both are reasonable choices, fwiw. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- localtoast · 2013-03-12 10:15 InspIRCd. I will choke you out if you think of Unreal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rubinlinux · 2013-03-12 14:03 nefarious ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadowh511 · 2013-03-30 15:13 I personally love shadowircd, it's easy to set up and scales well in production. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hapan · 2013-04-09 16:25 EFnet use [ircd-ratbox](http://www.ratbox.org/). It has all the features you would expect from an irc server including SSL. It's very stable and runs on Linux/*BSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EsotericForest · 2013-06-21 19:20 It's been years since I've used it but I love me some Unreal.
