Using HexChat to set a alias/rename a #channel? o_O reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-25 16:56 I use HexChat on Windows, and I really don't want server tabs open all the time, once I'm connected I have very LITTLE reason to stare at a server tab taking up space and making my sidebar ugly. Basically, only one channel I sit in calls itself #chat because it's on a network specifcally for the purpose of the webiste, so rather than calling it #websitename or #websitenamechat or something, it just uses #chat, but that's a pain to look at when everything else is named properly. Is there any way I can alias that channel, or somehow make it show a different display name in the sidebar, yet while still connecting to the right #chat channel? I hope this makes sense, let me know if anybody knows of a way, thank you! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-25 19:30 It looks like someone did this with a patch, but... link is dead. http://forum.xchat.org/viewtopic.php?t=3262 I'm wondering why x/hexchat never implemented this feature, assuming the devs are in tons of channels all the time, it would make sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2013-02-25 22:16 /settab #DesiredChannelNameHere This is, however, only temporary, and needs to be applied every time you start your client (as far as I know) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-26 01:39 I wonder if I can apply this apply as a command on connect... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-26 01:44 Alright, that seemed to work, any idea how I can "separate" the ones that have more than one channel per server, yo ucan see #plex and #spiceworks in the example as well as the #bukkit, #minecraft and #diablo as well. http://i.imgur.com/ZnaCGV2.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnStrangerGalt · 2013-02-26 04:59 You can use the connect command to run [THIS](http://docs.hexchat.org/en/latest/addons.html#do-at) script for each channel. That is to run it every time you start up hexchat. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-26 13:08 How would I use that to separate the nesting though? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2013-02-26 14:42 So basically you want a list not a tree? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-26 14:51 Correct, if that's possible, if not I can live with the trees, but I'll just keep the server tabs at that point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2013-02-26 14:55 Not possible without digging through the code. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-26 17:04 Thanks for the confirmation, I'll just stick with tree view :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2013-03-22 01:00 You might be interested in [this commit](https://github.com/hexchat/he xchat/commit/265207a97a345445bbafefbfa1cd24df6fd443dd) that wont indent those other channels. You can try a test build [here](http://dl.hexchat.org/hexchat/testing/tomek/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-03-22 01:16 I'm mobile at the moment. Is this your commit? Assuming it will get reverted with each update of hexchat? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2013-03-22 01:19 It is mine, it will not be reverted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-03-25 23:25 Thanks, this works perfect. Is there a way, however, to remove the tree view that I still get? There's still a "parent channel" that shows up if i'm on multiple channels on one server. Ideally I'd like the left column to just be a simple list of what channels i'm on. I don't have the capability to build from a code commit, so if you do happen to have some extra time and could remove that, I'd appreciate it, and it would make me a happy IRC user. thanks! :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TingPing · 2013-03-26 03:43 I don't think that's worthy of its own option to be officially added and if I gave you a custom build you would never update and we don't want that ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-03-26 03:53 Haha very true :P I'm working with it now though and liking the change so far. I'm adding more and more channels all the time anyhow, so I'll eventually get to a point where I'm going to want those server tabs back anyways :)
