What IRC Client Do You Use? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- d45611 · 2013-02-10 12:51 Just wondering what some of the more popular clients are these days? I'm using an unregistered version of mIRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helzibah · 2013-02-10 13:53 I use `irssi`, running inside `tmux` on a virtual Linux server. For graphical clients I'm a fan of xchat / hexchat, what I need next is a decent Android client I think as `irssi` doesn't play hugely nicely with my `ssh` app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- plus · 2013-02-10 14:26 Best choice for android, I think, is andchat connecting to a ZNC session which you run alongside your irssi session. Alternatively, you can JUST use the ZNC, and also connect your irssi session through the ZNC. That way, you can use the same handle for both irssi and mobile through andchat without having to disconnect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- curson · 2013-02-10 14:31 `irssi` user here as well. I've been wondering if `weechat` is worth a try, but I'm so comfortable and settled down with irssi that I can't be bothered to take a proper look elsewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-02-10 14:33 Thanks for the suggestions, I went with HexChat. Seems to be the best freeware client around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helzibah · 2013-02-10 14:35 Yes, I've heard good things about `weechat`, but apparently the long URL detection is pretty messed up which is discouraging me from switching. I'm also now very used to my `irssi` setup so switching seems like more hassle than any potential benefits! (Currently running scripts are `adv_windowlist`, `hilightwin`, `trackbar`, `complete_lastspoke`, `nickcolor` and `bitlbee_typing_notice`.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helzibah · 2013-02-10 14:36 I believe `irssi` has some form of bouncer-type functionality that I'd like to investigate at some point, otherwise as you say, ZNC is probably the way to go. Thanks for the recommendation of AndChat, I've seen it mentioned before so it's worth looking up for sure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pikacharmeowth · 2013-02-10 14:38 I've been using WeeChat in a tmux session. It's similar to irssi in a lot of ways but I find multi-server management a bit easier in weechat. Lots of plug-ins too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jj26meu · 2013-02-10 15:02 MIRC..been using it for years and dont feel like porting over all of my configurations to anything else. Gets the job done and has pretty good customization. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- stpizz · 2013-02-10 15:25 It's very similar to irssi, without a lot of the (admittedly small and somewhat silly) annoyances that I find with irssi, such as the fact that pasting any code with a leading tab ends up with me PM'ing some random guy something he doesn't understand. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2013-02-10 15:26 I've been using xchat-wdk for years now. it's extremely customisable and it does everything I need/want, although it does have a few drawbacks (though, if you got it's source code I bet you could compile it yourself and fix a bunch of issues). Hexchat is the 'new' xchat-wdk but I haven't switched over to it - almost nothing has been added if you compare it to one of the last releases of xchat-wdk, but it seems a little bit more bloaty. I've heard Hexchat has fixed a lot of bugs but personally I haven't noticed a difference in stability etc with either client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Maaasta · 2013-02-10 15:38 Using mirc for like 8 years or so. But im looking for a good android irc client atm any recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2013-02-10 15:56 It's not any more 'bloated'. I'm running the latest git version and it's not any bigger than it was a few years ago. I appreciate the bug fixes (especially regarding to saving and url handling). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2013-02-10 15:57 I use hexchat in combination with ZNC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-02-10 15:59 I'm an irssi fan as well. I use it across all of my Linux machines and VMs, as well as with my Windows machine. I also keep Xchat installed on my Linux boxes in case I feel like using a GUI client for some reason. Same with mIRC on Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tacticalbread · 2013-02-10 16:28 weechat is the best. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2013-02-10 17:46 Meh, none of the bug fixes effect me (I don't care for the URL catcher etc), but its memory usage does seem to be higher - particularly when I'm in a lot of channels. Nor do I like the "rebranding" that they've done, but that's not exactly an issue, lol... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-02-10 17:59 ii as backend, emacs as frontend my preference is simple, if a program is more daemon-like than interactive-like, C otherwise, emacslisp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nupogodi · 2013-02-10 18:05 Textual for OS X. If I need to be covert and SSH in from somewhere, I use irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2013-02-10 18:15 I was mentioning the handling of urls, not the catcher (who uses that?). They've improved the detection of urls quite a bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- haywire · 2013-02-10 18:36 irssi+ZNC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-02-10 19:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oblommer · 2013-02-10 19:25 Colloquy on Mac, Limechat and Colloquy on iOS, and ZNC as a bouncer on a Linux VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Afro_Samurai · 2013-02-10 20:42 We have the same set up, and I use [AndChat](https://play.google.com/s tore/apps/details?id=net.andchat&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDM sIm5ldC5hbmRjaGF0Il0.) on my Android device. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Afro_Samurai · 2013-02-10 20:45 On my home server irssi, with the irssi-proxy module loaded, in a screen session. On my laptop XChat, on my Android phone AndChat, which connect through irssi, acting as a bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2013-02-10 21:39 It's called [Irssi Proxy](http://www.irssi.org/documentation/proxy), and is included in the source, but you must build it using the --with- proxy option during ./Configure. I think they stopped developing it long ago, and it lacks many of the wonderful features a bouncer like ZNC has; good documentation, web UI, history buffer and easy configuration. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2013-02-10 22:01 Another vote for weechat. I use ZNC for continuity rather than a terminal multiplexer. I used xchat/hexchat before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Helzibah · 2013-02-10 22:25 Ah, thanks for that! You've saved me doing the research, I only vaguely knew of the existence of the proxy, I hadn't looked at the details. ZNC comes widely recommended, it just seems perhaps overkill when all I really want is to keep my phone with a similar view to `irssi` which I obviously want still in a persistent `tmux` session. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sad_monkey232 · 2013-02-10 22:29 Could you share your config for that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sad_monkey232 · 2013-02-10 22:29 ERC, which is the default emacs irc client. (I think.. it might actually be rcirc though) I love it cause like everything in emacs it's rather portable, so I can go to any os that runs emacs, and have my irc client how I like it. Then there is the whole emacs lisp customization thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2013-02-11 01:02 I used Irssi Proxy for quite a while, and found it to be a nice break from maintaining a bouncer, although I found the Irssi Proxy configuration to be more cumbersome. Since you're already familiar with Irssi, you might prefer it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TalonLardner · 2013-02-11 01:03 I've been having luck with KVIrc on Windows 7 myself. Simple little program, seems to have potential for those who like to tweak their programs, but I have no problem using it "out of the box". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bobdle · 2013-02-11 03:05 I still use ircN ---------------------------------------------------------------------- urbels · 2013-02-14 11:17 ZNC + Androidirc in android and KVIrc on linux ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flotwig · 2013-02-18 22:24 I use HexChat on top of ZNC. On my mobile, I used to use AndroIRC, but I don't use IRC on my phone anymore. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teklord · 2013-02-19 18:03 Why would you use "freeware" when you can use "free software"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- random_anonymous_guy · 2013-02-20 22:19 I use [KVIrc](http://kvirc.net/). Linux, Windows, Mac. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-25 15:42 On Windows, HexChat is hands down a winner in my book. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2013-02-25 15:57 That's what I decided to go with. Really good client. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- B1tN1nja · 2013-02-25 16:15 Good pick, I actually just reinstalled a few days ago, it used to be called XChat-WDK but it's since been forked to it's own project as HexChat, and I'm loving the changes I see from when I used WDK a few months back. I'm actually currently running through my network list, SSLing everything I can, and running the client through a sweedish proxy, because... well... why the hell not, right?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glomph · 2013-03-05 01:14 Recently irccloud +znc, but I think I will probably go back to hexchat unless when the beta ends the cost isn't a bit lower. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FrankieSayRelax · 2013-05-10 03:44 irssi running inside screen on my VPS. That way, no matter what machine I'm on I get the same experience and I'm always connected.
