How do I remain logged into a server when idling? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3ricG · 2012-12-12 01:33 I leave my IRC logged into a screen session on a server, and connect to it whenever I want to chat. The problem I'm having is that when I log back on, my account is always logged out (I have a bunch of messages saying I need to identify with nickserv). I'm not 100% familiar with all things IRC, but is there a way to prevent my account from being logged out? This happens on a few private servers I connect to, and Freenode. Thanks for any help/guidance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2012-12-12 02:09 Where's your server at? Is it personally hosted? It sounds like either you're logging in an not identifying with nickserv, you are ghosting yourself with another client, or your server is losing connectivity. If it's a home-server try tracking the network connectivity on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3ricG · 2012-12-12 02:28 It's a VPS in CA. I identify with nicserv every time I connect (because of this problem), and I haven't logged in with another client for a while now. I'll contact my host to see if there has been any network outages/downtime that I wasn't aware of. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2012-12-12 02:47 Not a bad idea. I use Linode without issue. If you scroll back in your status window to when you got disconnected you should see some useful lines like "Disconnected" and so-on ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3ricG · 2012-12-12 02:56 How much do you pay? If you're paying a lot and only using it for IRC, I would recommend [buyvm/frantech](http://buyvm.net/). I only pay 3.50/month for each VPS I have from them. If you want to buy from them you'll have to wait until they get more stock; and if you want the cheaper VPSs, hang in their IRC close to the stock release. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleyankan · 2012-12-12 03:01 I pay $20 a month, and I host websites on it, do some development, create an serve out TCP streams to differen services I run. It's way under utilized. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3ricG · 2012-12-12 03:08 AH, well in that case forget everything I just said, haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- p014k · 2012-12-12 18:51 Ping! Pong! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kellyzdude · 2012-12-12 22:16 This is where I'd start ^^ Which client are you using? See if there is a way to give it perform commands, where it will automatically send those commands any time it connects - you can use this to send a /nick and then a /nickserv identify. I haven't had any issues with BuyVM losing connectivity, at least not frequently, but it could be just about anywhere, from the client dropping the connection, a route failing between client and server, or the server dropping you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tanilolli · 2012-12-12 23:27 Set up a ZNC server. It will keep you logged in even if a client is not connected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekirbylover · 2012-12-13 12:30 Would be better to set up [ZNC.](http://znc.in) Assuming you're using Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install znc sudo useradd znc sudo -u znc znc --makeconf
