Having trouble connecting to my ZNC server reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-17 22:52 I've have narrowed it down to my router. I've forwarded all ports I can find related to IRC forwarded on the modem router and my router. I can connect on the modem router, but it will not on mine. Any ideas why? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2012-09-17 23:28 Try disabling your router's firewall. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-17 23:53 Both firewalls are off and problem presists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pteraspidomorphi · 2012-09-18 00:12 router brand and model? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 01:41 Netgear WDNR4500 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tanilolli · 2012-09-18 02:42 have you tried connecting to the local IP of the ZNC server rather than the public IP? Some ISPs have issues with connecting to your own public IP from behind the NAT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 03:15 The ZNC server is currently at a different location then where I'm at now. If I connect to the modem router, I can connect, but on my router, it only shows it has connected, but no data is received. I can confirm on the ZNC end that it recognizes my IRC client and is (attempting to) sending data to it, but nothing is received. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tanilolli · 2012-09-18 04:10 I'm not sure what you mean by "connect to the modem router" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 04:13 There are two routers; one for the upstairs that also functions as the modem, and one downstairs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BaconOverdose · 2012-09-18 07:27 You're using SSL right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 13:42 Yup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 14:06 >Some ISPs have issues with connecting to your own public IP from behind the NAT. WTF? That makes no sense. It's just some routers can NAT-loopback while others cannot. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 14:06 So they're two different subnets? Why are you using two routers, and do you understand the implications of this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 14:26 The wifi signal on the modems router doesn't reach my room in the basement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 14:40 Routers are meant to route between different networks. So, are you using two different subnets? How are the routers connected? Home consumer routers also combine the functions of modem, switch and wireless access point. It's likely that you are trying to use this second home router as not a router, but just a switch and WAP. How you do that would depend on the model, but basically you need to make sure that routing is turned off and you are only using it as a bridge, with DHCP and NAT turned off. It's well worth you learning some networking basics as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 14:45 They're connected from an ethernet port on the back of the modem router to the Internet port on the back of the other router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tanilolli · 2012-09-18 14:48 Yes, but some ISPs block loopbacks. I know I had this issue before I changed ISP while using the same hardware. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 14:50 I recommend you search for webpages that will show you how to use your home router as a network bridge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 14:52 No, that makes no sense. The ISP has nothing to do with it whatsoever, as the packets never leave the local network with NAT- loopback. Your previous ISP must have been doing the loopback for you, but that is just something they must have done to reduce support requests, as it's a fucked up way to have your network configured. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 15:02 Ha! All I needed to do was disable DHCP and move the cable from the Internet port to one of the LAN ports. I can connect now without any problems! Thank you very much! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 15:08 No problem. Just be aware that you are now using your home router as just a switch (you can get dedicated switches very cheaply) and wireless will not work. You need to look into using it as a bridge to get wireless working. If it doesn't support DHCP Relay, you may want to re-enable it if you want to use DHCP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- disturbedmaggot · 2012-09-18 15:15 Wireless is working fine so far, so I'm guessing it's being used as a bridge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-09-18 15:24 Hmmn, yeah, there was no reason why it would not work actually. You are probably going to need to set up static IP addresses for everything though. Without knowing the details of how the network is now set up (IP addresses and subnet masks) it's not possible to tell how best to set things. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-10-14 00:03 what port are you running znc as?
