How to Connect to Reddit IRC with Mibbit a Web Based IRC Host reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlyinEye · 2012-09-05 09:15 Not all of us are comfortable with an IRC client. I use mirc myself, but I've found mibbit useful when not at a computer with an irc client installed. I thought I'd write a short tutorial on how to connect to irc.snoonet.com/reddit with mibbit. Head over to [mibbit](http://mibbit.com/) You can create a new account or just click on the chat now button at the bottom of this page. When you get to the "Welcome to Mibbit Choose a Nickname and channel to start chatting" page, you will see server connection options. For you first option, you have *connect* and a pull down menu. To the right of that pull down menu, click on *server* and enter *irc.snoonet.com:6667* in the server box. Where it says *Nick* enter the name you want displayed for you. Where it says *channel* enter *#reddit* and click on the connect button and you're on. **Quick setup guide** *server = irc.snoonet.com:6667 *nick = whatever you want your name to be *channel = #reddit Hope this helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wub_wub · 2012-09-05 09:43 It's easier to use http://webchat.snoonet.com/ just type in nickname you want and channel(s) you want to join. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-09-05 12:08 Yes, mibbit should be avoided. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2012-09-05 12:16 Uh, why? For a web client it's -very- good, though obviously limited in control codes etc but they're working on making colours work "properly". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-09-05 14:27 It's for-profit, which in itself is fine, however hijacking links with affiliate spam or scanning your chat for "contextual" ads is not. It also uses a small range of shared IPs which is a pain for IRC servers to control abuse. Additionally (last time I looked, hopefully will have changed now) they log queries, including your service passwords on networks strictly nothing to do with mibbit. They've also had some security issues last year, combine logging with security issues and you get the idea. In short, if a network provides its own stable webchat client, usually based on qwebirc (or iris, a fork of qwebirc, but there are others) you should use that for a multitude of abuse management and security reasons. There's no difference in terms of complexity of use to embed qwebirc or iris in an iframe (wizard via /embed) than there is to stick a mibbit frame in your site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2012-09-05 14:50 Agreed, if there is a qwebirc etc alternative then that should be used but mibbit is still a good client with lots of features. Also, the logging is an opt-in feature and AFAIK is encrypted.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2012-09-22 17:50 If you're going to IRC for control codes, why are you using a web client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2012-09-22 18:03 You can still talk on IRC without colouring individual words.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2012-09-22 18:12 That's my point, web clients work fine for talking. It seemed to me that you were relying on web clients for full client color functionality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2012-09-22 18:15 Ah. I was just asking meeb why he thinks mibbit's so bad. Honestly all web clients have basically the same functions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-10-14 00:12 mibbit can't SASL auth you to nickserv. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-10-14 00:12 except they accidentally all their logs once a while ago... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-10-14 00:14 [mibbit lets IRC network admins set up CGIIRC host spoofing, so mibbit users show up as their own real IPs.](http://wiki.mibbit.com/index.php /Enable_Mibbit_on_Your_IRC_Server) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-10-14 11:36 Sure, which is a terrible idea. Never trust a random third party to be able to set their own IPs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-10-14 15:45 except its not random... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-10-14 18:22 Unless you personally know and trust the owners of the company it's an external organisation you're giving the explicit access to cock your IRC network up. Unless you don't care about any form of security or access policies it's a bad, bad idea.
