Free irc bouncer? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nashmann · 2012-07-29 00:15 Greetings fellow redditors! I'm curious if anyone of you have an idea on where to get a free bouncer... if those are even available still. I did find like two sites on google but to me they appeared as scamsites :( So, any help would be greatly appreciated! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2012-07-29 00:28 You could try a shell account with cjb.net with irssi, but i think you are going to have a hard time finding a free bouncer... Plus some bouncer networks are blocked on some irc networks since so many people try to connect from the same host. you might just want to get a small vps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nashmann · 2012-07-29 00:42 Thanks for the quick answer :) The "problem" is that my "programming"/scripting knowledge is less then sufficient to setup this stuff by myself so i would rather get a "pre-made" one :) Well, it looks like i'll actually have to buy one. Are there any providers you would recommend? I live in germany if that's any help. Again, thanks alot for your help! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-07-29 01:04 Never, ever use a free IRC bouncer. Remember that a bouncer provider can intercept and read or log all of your IRC traffic. Many free IRC bouncers have been known to have rouge admins who go haywire and steal people's accounts or generally abuse it. If you can't host your own because you lack the skill to do so just save up the 50p or whatever it costs these days to buy one from a well established firm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xbox666 · 2012-07-29 01:08 I use geek bouncer with no problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austindkelly · 2012-07-29 01:16 maybe http://www.lowendbox.com/ not sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faghat · 2012-07-29 03:31 [EliteBNC](http://www.elitebnc.net/) and [GeekBouncer](http://geekbouncer.co.uk/) are both very good, with hardly any downtime. With regards to meeb's comment, although privacy is a huge concern, the fact that you pay for something doesn't reduce the chance of something going wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theredkrawler · 2012-07-29 06:28 Why not just get a vps from somewhere listed on lowendbox.com? I have a basic vps from Prometheus I found on there which is something like $20/year and runs an irc session under a screen (though I have run znc in the past), as well as a whole heap of little novelty projects I like to tinker with that aren't possible on shared hosting. If you can find one that allows you to set your reverse dns you can use your domain to appear on irc too instead of an ip which is nice. It's always best to pay for stuff like this, imo. When you get it "free" there's no responsibility for the operator to guarantee your privacy or service. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-07-29 10:53 A micro instance on Amazon EC2 is free for one year, on new accounts. It may be a bit tricky for a newbie, but if you can manage to set up a server, just install ZNC and you have your own bouncer server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wuffers · 2012-07-29 14:06 I used to use [rdlBNC](http://rdlbnc.com) but it seems like they're dead now :< ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pacmanlives · 2012-07-29 14:36 Thats a really good way to do it. I just use tmux and weechat and I have had uptime's 180+ with this combo. And yes could can do this with screen and irssi too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ne7split · 2012-07-29 16:37 I'm an admin for [FreeBNC](http://www.freebnc.co.uk). Although we only provide free accounts for users on SwiftIRC, however if you're using Snoonet I can provide you a ZNC user there. If you'd rather run a process yourself, I recommend renting a small VPS, such as are provided by companies like [Evorack](http://www.evorack.com) (I personally used this company for a year, until I upgraded to a larger server). You're welcome to ask me any questions about setting up. edit - I use the nick Mike on Snoonet, or t1|Mike on SwiftIRC and Freenode. edit 2 - Also maybe worth a look - [IRCCloud](http://www.irccloud.com). A little more basic and requires an invite, though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nliadm · 2012-07-29 19:21 tinyvz.com, if they're in stock ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-07-29 22:12 I prefer to use a bouncer, as you can connect to the same session using any client, including on my smartphone. SSH on a smartphone is only suitable for the odd command. I connect irssi to the bouncer, within tmux, on the same server, but my main IRC client is mIRC with NNSCRIPT. I've been using mIRC since the mid-'90s, and have never found anything better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rayZor_ · 2012-07-29 23:36 OVH has been giving away free micro VPSes http://www.ovh.com/us/vks/ but they have a daily limit on how many they give out, and you need a mobile # to receive SMS (or use http://pinger.com/textfree/). Personally I've used http://www.xzibition.com/ for the past year and they're alright. Lots of vhosts to choose from, and they have a bunch of different nodes/locations to choose. I pay about $8/mo for mine because I have an IRCD package, however I think their regular shells are abour $3/mo (possibly cheaper since I believe there is a 20% off coupon listed on their site) Last, http://vps6.net/ has some cheap VPSes that allow IRC. I've a box with them atm, and their support is pretty fast at responding and friendly. They have a data centre in Germany as well if you plan to get an OpenVZ box. Don't forget to use the coupon if you go with them, and if you want the extra resources from the coupon, you have to ticket them after you order. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-07-30 08:57 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-07-31 04:20 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kenada · 2012-08-04 01:27 this is what I do also, though my free tier is about to expire :( so gonna need a new solution soon ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-08-04 02:08 I am on my second account, made with a different email address and bank card. I also have paid-for Rackspace servers and free Windows Azure servers, for my company, so I can use any of these for the bouncer. Rackspace and Azure are cheaper than EC2 and better, in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- haywire · 2012-08-13 20:02 ZNC is fantastic. Get a cheap VPS, and you can do fantastic things with it too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unsatisfactory · 2012-08-15 05:00 So what if you wanted one that could be anonymous? I don't mind paying as long as they would accept pre-paid credit cards. Paying for a VPS and running a BNC server would defeat the privacy benefits a BNC offers.
