Can someone give me a step-by-step on how to use IRC? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 05:51 Like beginning to end what I need to go from nothing to chatting on an IRC channel? Completely ground up. Thanks guys! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Akama · 2012-07-05 06:38 Are you looking to use a program or web interface? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 06:40 Whichever option gives more ease of use/is free. Also I'm running Windows Vista 32bit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Akama · 2012-07-05 06:45 If your using Windows, mIRC is a good option. The guide on mIRC site does a good job of covering the basics. [mIRC Guide](http://www.mirc.com/install.html) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 06:49 I have it downloaded but it asks me in 30 days to pay for an account and thats unfortunatly not possible for me to make payments online. EDIT: Also the guide doesn't seem to help me all that much. EDIT2: And when I attempt to connect to any server using mIRC it just freezes and leaves with it saying "mIRC is not responding" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-07-05 06:54 KVIrc is a very good one. I got started with IRC on webchat and once I knew the basics, I went to KVIrc. You may want to start web based as it seems to me that is a little easier. That will get you learning about the commands of IRC, then you can move to a client and learn about the client commands. People may not agree, but that is just my opinion :) EDIT: KVIrc is free :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 06:58 Ok thanks, I'll try that. So what would I do to go about IRC web based? Do I need to download anything. Is there a website I can visit. Thanks for the help! (Sorry If I'm being painful about this) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2012-07-05 07:12 Websites are easier to use…but they have no session permanence. Freenode has http://webchat.freenode.net and snoonet has http://webchat.snoonet.com If you want, you can try to get an [IRCCloud](https://irccloud.com/) invite, which is a sort of super-web based chat site. It stays online for you so you just log into it and get logs of what happened when you're away. If you want a "real" client, the simplest and best (windows) is probably mIRC. People will spit and curse, but there's a reason its popular. It is probably one of the most pirated pieces of software, but if you get a guilty conscience, you can use [ychat](http://www.silverex.org/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-07-05 07:19 You aren't being painful at all :) Starting off web based you do not need to download or install anything. There are many sites like webchat.ospnet.org and others hat follow the same pattern, like webchat.snoonet.com or webchat.quakenet.org. You go there and you type in the room you want and you connect. A really popular one is Mibbit.com. You make an account, pick a server and room and connect. Were there any particular places you wanted to connect to? Ex: Freenode or Esper. I suggest going to webchat.snoonet.com (Reddit's new IRC network) to get started and click the room #reddit. From there pick a username then connect :) Once you are there you can start learning commands and learning how to register. I would be perfectly happy to help you with that, as i am sure many others there will be happy to help too. Hope it isn't too much to handle, keep asking questions that you have, I'd love to continue helping :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zellaw · 2012-07-05 16:54 Well, I've written up a guide on things would work. Go read it all, honestly only thing it doesn't cover are self-explanatory things. http://bit.ly/OuMFup ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 18:14 Thanks, Ill try using webchat.snoonet.com that sounds like a great place to start. Also are there any Canada bases servers that might give me less lag that I could look out for? Or is that even an option? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 18:19 So when you say "most pirated pieces of software" does that mean that there is a website I can go to that will give me a key when my 30 day trial ends? Also mIRC for some reason doesn't like to work on this computer and the moment I try to connect (to anything) It freezes and leaves me with a "is not responding" window. I tried uninstalling it through windows control pannel and that didn't work, then I went into the program files and found the uninstaller in the mIRC folder and it said that the un-instillation was not complete then it just cancels out and leaves me with all the same files. THEN I tried to delete the folder that mIRC was in, in the program files folder and it said I needed special permission for that even though I am the admin for this computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2012-07-05 19:04 You can download torrents of mIRC from various sites, including tpb. However, I am not condoning piracy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-05 19:08 Sweet, thanks man. EDIT: That's staying in my favorites bar for a *LOOOONG* time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-07-05 19:41 Typically it doesn't matter where you are located, there are servers located all over the place for one network, and you just randomly connect to one. I don't know of any Canadian based Networks sadly. With webchat, you can't choose the server you connect to unless I am mistaken, you only choose the network. Hope that helps :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zellaw · 2012-07-05 20:55 Lol, no problem xD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dudeedud4 · 2012-07-08 17:56 You should try XChat-WDK, it is free and open source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dustin- · 2012-07-10 03:49 mIRC is awesome because even once the trial expires, it will let you on after a 10-30 second nag screen. At least 6.35 was like that, I payed for mine before 7.x was released. Don't know why it would be crashing like that. Did you change any settings you shouldn't have? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-10 03:54 Never touched a THING! I've made that mistake **far** too many times with other programs. And it crashed the first time I opened it as well so I didn't even have a chance to change anything. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dustin- · 2012-07-10 04:00 That's weird. Did you download the wrong version? Maybe you had a corrupt download? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-10 04:04 I don't think so. It was from here: http://download.cnet.com/mIRC/3000 -2150_4-10001733.html?part=dl-50355&subj=dl&tag=button ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dustin- · 2012-07-10 04:08 Try uninstalling/re-downloading to see if that helps. Also, 30 million downloads. I had no idea that mIRC was that popular. o_o ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-10 04:14 Like I stated before, when I try to uninstall/delete/get rid of it in any way, it won't let me. Either by saying I need permission even though I'm the system admin, or by saying that it was unable to complete the un-installation and exiting. EDIT: Da fuck? I just tried again and this time it decided to work... Hmmm. Maybe I will re-install it later and try it again to see if it crashes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dustin- · 2012-07-10 04:20 Awesome! Well if you do get it working, drop me a PM and I'll try and see if I can't help you set it up. Not saying that you're not capable, but mIRC (and IRC) has a fairly difficult learning curve to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- REDN3CK_B00TS · 2012-07-10 04:36 Thanks man! That would be great. Ill see if I can add you my reddit friends list for now so I don't forget. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dustin- · 2012-07-10 04:47 Awesome! Btw, I'm barely ever on the Reddit IRC. If you get it working, you'd probably have better luck finding me on GhostsIRC (irc.ghostsirc.net #ghosts). But I'm going to bed now. Later!
