#Reddit IRC update: Goodbye, and Welcome! reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 00:07 #\#Reddit and its IRC operator crew will cease support for #Reddit and #Reddit-* name space channels on freenode. The reason for this switch is to provide a chat environment for all sub-reddits, and the #Reddit IRC community. #Freenode is designed for projects and over all development based IRC channels. It has offered much support for us in #Reddit over the years, helped us, and many of its staff became our friends. #As sub-Reddit chat communities become larger in scale, our mission is to grow with what was, a tight niche of small communities. As IRC is something the #Reddit IRC staff has always been interested and involved in; we feel it is time to evolve, and to give sub Reddit IRC communities more support, and more breathing room not bound by the Freenode policies. #Project Snoonet was started by the #Reddit IRC staff to offer friendlier support for the growing sub-Reddit IRC communities, offer a friendly web chat, and offer integrated tools for users involve themselves with their subreddit's live chat communities. Amongst providing tools necessary to maintain those communities for subreddit moderators, Snoonet's goals are set on uniting one another for those who share the same passion for live chat as we do by making the chats easily accessible to those who seek it. #Freenode is great for programmers, developers, and general chatting; however project Snoonet can not be supported by Freenode; and it is against their policy for us to build our project around it. For chatters not wishing to evolve with the sub reddit IRC communities by opening another IRC connection, Freenode offers a great general chat channel: #defocus which is maintained by Freenode itself. You, as subreddit owners are free to host an IRC channel wherever you like, whether it's Freenode or otherwise, but hope to still see you around in our new home #Reddit on irc.snoonet.com (6667/6697 for SSL) #For those that develop Reddit-based projects like many others, #reddit-dev will remain on Freenode For those looking to evolve with us, [here's how to get started!](http://www.snoonet.com/help.php) #We thank you all, and thank Freenode for the years of chatting fun, and wish you all the best. Sincerely because we love bacon and narwhals, Snoonet www.snoonet.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 00:13 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 00:14 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 00:15 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 00:16 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 02:14 I can't join #reddit on snoonet, but I can join almost any other channel. What's the matter? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 02:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- talklittle · 2012-06-11 02:22 FYI for anyone registering a nick, the NickServ registration email went to Spam in gmail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 02:48 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 02:49 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- talklittle · 2012-06-11 03:19 Done. Thanks for the reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lunaticfringe80 · 2012-06-11 07:37 The question is: How many people are on the reddit freenode channels because they are already on freenode for other reasons? And, will those people consider it worthwhile to add another server to their irc client just for reddit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Islamic_Radical · 2012-06-11 09:13 #reddit on freenode IS A KNOWN TERRORIST HANGOUT ---------------------------------------------------------------------- curson · 2012-06-11 09:15 Interesting. Irssi is updated, see you on the new shiny network then ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- curson · 2012-06-11 09:28 Valid point, and I believe it's many. At the same time, is it a real "*issue*" having to add an additional connection? A connection to an IRC server is definitely not bandwidth consuming (especially since idling is the name of the game :D) or resource hungry to maintain, so I don't think there should be worries about this being a serious problem. From experience, in this kind of things, some users will be inevitably go missing, either for this reason or for simpler laziness in following the move, but all in all, if well organized it can work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- radio_free · 2012-06-11 09:31 Any particular reason for this, what about the ones who don't want to "evolve" with you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- farded · 2012-06-11 11:49 What's wrong with connecting to two servers? I don't know what setup other folks have, but all I do is type /connect irc.freenode.net (or whichever) to get on another server. Then again, I'm a pretty casual user (lurker) so I'm assuming I don't have the same issues power users have. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 16:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-11 16:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skuld · 2012-06-11 17:27 I'm hoping to see some new IRC communities born out of this too. /r/science has a new channel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2012-06-11 20:34 I like the idea, but poor implementation. I guess I have a couple comments. 1. If your going through the hassel of changing IRC networks (ie. losing lots of your users) why wouldn't you use your own domain name? 2. Why not migrate to an established network, where you can rely on an established infrastructure instead of trying to roll your own? 3. Enjoy your new flags. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- microchip08 · 2012-06-11 21:49 [Link for the lazy](irc://irc.snoonet.com:6667) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2012-06-11 22:38 I just discovered to my horror that the nick I've used on freenode for years, which matches my reddit username, is registered to someone else on this new snoonet. That seems to indicate we might have a lot of disruption, if nickserv registrations didn't get carried over - people we've been talking to a for a long time may not be able to get their registered nicks on the new IRC network. Do you plan to do anything to prevent this problem, and ensure a smooth transition of registered nicks from freenode to snoonet for channels that want to move over? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idealevil · 2012-06-12 01:26 If you contact a member of Snoonet staff in #help, then verify that you are indeed the account holder, by sending us a private message from said account on the site here, then I see no problem getting your nick registration sorted out. Carrying over registrations is not possible since we do not have access to Freenode's service databases. But rest assured that issues of channel/nick ownership will be addressed as they come up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KsaRedFX · 2012-06-12 01:30 this question is also officially in the rules on the [snoonet](http://snoonet.com/user.php) website, second rule for users ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idealevil · 2012-06-12 01:30 I would say that the main drawback to migrating to an established network is being bound by the rules/policies/etc of said network. By moving the community to its own little peice of the internet it allows more freedom as well as the ability to more adequately address the needs of the community as a whole. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KsaRedFX · 2012-06-12 01:32 i can answer #2 for you, We're using a new network because this way we can structure the rules in a reddit themed way and have little non- reddit conflict ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 01:33 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2012-06-12 02:38 I can agree with this. I think the only exception is when someone decides they don't like your piece of the internet and decide to ruin the fun for everyone. Few protocols attract packets like RFC 1459. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2012-06-12 02:53 There's nothing "wrong" with it, but I think the point is that perhaps many people aren't motivated enough to connect to a new network, especially if they're not already active participants on any reddit channels. To the extent that that's true, it may make it more difficult for reddit channels to attract people, even if it's not hard for someone who knows they want to be on reddit channels to connect to the new network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2012-06-12 02:56 Ahh thanks, I didn't know that. The policy is kinda vague on the snoonet web site, perhaps it should be reworded to be clearer. However, I'm also worried about channel regulars who have been consistently using a nick other than their reddit username, who might find it registered by someone else on Snoo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 03:12 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cos · 2012-06-12 03:39 Yeah, and thanks. What I meant to refer to in this comment, though, was about moving the channel I co-admin over here, and worrying that some of the people on it who may have been using a freenode-registered name for years, may find that they can't get it on Snoonet. Maybe there isn't a good solution to that, but I wish there were. [ And of course this applies to other channels too. ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 07:49 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 08:56 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 09:26 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- prgrmr · 2012-06-12 09:26 What's wrong with allowing the community to decide whether it wishes to migrate? This totalitarian decree so profoundly belies everything for which reddit stands. I'm so glad we're allowing several ops' power trips to inconvenience hundreds of users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- remlap · 2012-06-12 11:35 Whatever I try I can not get the email from NickServ for two days in a row now and two different email accounts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-12 20:15 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- remlap · 2012-06-12 21:09 Thanks mate, it's suddenly appeared in my spam filtered email after a few hours not sure why. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-06-13 23:34 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Theowningone · 2012-06-15 17:49 I know I don't plan on connecting any time soon. All I've seen come of this is channel op's setting +m on their channels and pointing to snoonet. That's not a valid reason for me to join. I don't know who runs snoonet, anything about them, what their plans are, or anything about the network. I don't plan on joining just because some random channel op tells me to. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lunaticfringe80 · 2012-06-15 21:40 I'm not even sure I understand what benefit there is in moving to snoonet. Apparently there is more "freedom" but I've yet to see an explanation of what freedoms we are currently lacking on freenode. I also don't understand the necessity of +m'ing the existing freenode channels. Why not leave the freenode channels in place, possibly with new OPs if the current ones want to leave for snoonet? Seems like a dick move on the OPs part to fuck those who don't care about some new little network. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeedAGoodUsername · 2012-06-16 03:22 I just checked #reddit on freenode and it has 344 users on it (this being 4:22am UTC+1), #minecraft has 255 (and where redstonehelper can be found) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NeedAGoodUsername · 2012-06-16 03:25 its the 16th now and its -m.
