How do I set up a bot on my server? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-05-25 06:36 I wanted to start this new channel and i wanted to put a bot on my webserver but my experience with bots so far is not too good. Does anyone know any good place to learn and read about this stuff? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TehZomB · 2012-05-25 19:14 If you have to ask, you shouldn't be running your own channel. Go to a network with services if you insist on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dorisfrench · 2012-05-25 19:35 Well how does anyone ever learn if they don't ask. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ne7split · 2012-05-25 19:40 Could you be a little more specific? Which network do you use? * If you just want a bot to manage the channel you should probably just assign a BotServ bot (this depends on the network - for example on [Freenode](http://blog.freenode.net/2008/04/registering-a-channel- on-freenode/) you would just register the channel, or on SwiftIRC you would invite [BotServ](http://wiki.swiftirc.net/index.php?title=Botserv#Assign). * If you want a bot with your own commands on a public server that you are using, you could try using something like an [Eggdrop bot](http://www.egghelp.org/setup.htm) or perhaps something like [Phenny](http://inamidst.com/phenny/). I'd recommend checking the network rules about bots first (sometimes they are throttled when you try to join the server). I'll stress that the configuration for Eggdrop bots is pretty long and should be filled out in full! Phenny or similar bots are a lot easier to set up. * If you're talking about a services bot on your own IRC server, [Anope](http://wiki.anope.org/index.php/FAQ) has a good [guide](http://wiki.anope.org/index.php/START_HERE!). I know very little about this (I don't run an IRC server). Feel free to PM me if you need help with anything except the last option, I may be able to help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TehZomB · 2012-05-25 19:48 Ideally, you would learn from an experienced OP in a channel you plan to OP in as well. Although, services have pretty much eliminated the need for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2012-05-26 01:59 A good simple bot to work with is [supybot](http://sourceforge.net/projects/supybot/), but its kind of bloated and has some irritating quirks. Still, its a good start. If you don't mind writing your own, the [cinch bot framework (ruby)](http://github.com/cinchrb/cinch) is easy to use and very flexible ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hintss · 2012-05-27 12:54 a bot is basically an automated client. it connects to IRC just like a normal client, then it does stuff. what stuff it does is for you to decide.
