Affiliation with the Reddit IRC channels? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatharticMonkey · 2012-03-28 08:00 A number of us over at r/introvert have decided that we would like an IRC channel. We already have an ICahHazChat room and we're planning on creating an IRC channel (probably later today) on a trial basis in order to gauge interest in it with a view to keeping it operational. How would one go about affiliating oneself with you fine people here at r/irc, and is there any reason to? I noticed that it says in the sidebar that if a channel has the redditalien bot, it's affiliated. Does this mean it's as simple as using this bot in the channel, or is there something more? And are there any guidelines regarding channel naming? I noticed that the channels I saw are named #reddit-[subreddit]. Thanks, Monkey ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meeb · 2012-03-28 11:23 Just pick a network (freenode, QuakeNet, PirateIRC etc. etc. there are thousands) and make a user account (via NickServ or Q or whatever the network you pick has for user account services). Join a free channel (one with no-one in it already). Register it with chanserv on freenode, Q on QuakeNet, slightly different chanserv on Pirateirc, invite all your introvert friends! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AltReality · 2012-03-28 15:01 The "official" (?) Reddit IRC channel is on freenode, (#reddit) so you could join freenode and create a new channel (#introvert or something) and then register it, and invite folks to it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- no_numbers_here · 2012-03-28 15:37 Some channels are also named #\/r\/subreddit like #\/r\/bicycling (which I run.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- b3d0u1n · 2012-03-28 22:13 Most Reddit related channels seem to be on Freenode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2012-03-29 01:21 Official channels live on freenode in Reddit's #reddit-* namespace, so you probably want #reddit-introvert. You should register your nick with NickServ on freenode according to the instructions at [http://fre enode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup](http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#nicksetup ) (it's not at all difficult) and once you've verified your email register #reddit-introvert with ChanServ per [http://blog.freenode.net/2008/04/registering-a-channel-on- freenode/](http://blog.freenode.net/2008/04/registering-a-channel-on- freenode/). If you need assistance, or someone has "beat you to it", please let one of the "core ops" (found most often in #reddit) know and we'll help you out. We generally prefer that mods from the corresponding subreddit and the Reddit bot account "redditalien" hold foundership in the subreddit channels unless there are extenuating circumstances, so if at all possible it should be set up that way. ChanServ and NickServ are mostly very self-documenting, so just messaging those services with the "help" command(s) will often be a lot of use. If you'd like redditalien, the Reddit utility and channel management bot on freenode, to join your channel and be available for op or public use, do hit me up and we can set that up in seconds and give you a quick run-down of its features and usage. It runs on the Supybot framework and is also self-documenting, and likewise can be explored with the "help" (and "list") commands. My nick on freenode is bburhans; you may query me at any time with freenode- or reddit-related questions with /msg bburhans. We look forward to seeing you on freenode! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2012-03-29 01:25 You might consider moving to #reddit-bicycling so we can hook you up with the usual services. :) Endorsed channels are defined as those where redditalien has founder (it doesn't have to be the only account set +F, you can have up to four), the channel is mode -s (not marked secret), and the channel follows the #reddit-subredditname pattern (or something very similar, as appropriate). These are all things that need no reddit op intervention. If you also want redditalien's presence and features, the seniormost ops can instruct it to join your channel, and you can give it other flags with ChanServ depending on what types of channel management you want it to perform, if any. Cheers! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HarryMuffin · 2012-03-29 02:55 For what it's worth we run #radioreddit on irc.voxinfinitus.net. Very similar prinicples to freenode, we just like running our own servers because we are geeks. Some other /r channels are on there as well.
