Why is there not a proper web application for IRC yet? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- microchip08 · 2012-01-31 11:46 http://mibbit.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 11:49 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- go4it7arh · 2012-01-31 12:49 http://irccloud.com and others are in the works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 12:56 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2012-01-31 13:58 http://webchat.freenode.net you can link to channels directly by adding a query string, like so: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23reddit and even add a nickname like so: http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=%23reddit&nick=butt ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 14:25 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-01-31 14:56 I connect to my ZNC bouncer using Mibbit sometimes, when I do not have my laptop with me and I want to do too much chatting for the mobile phone. I can connect to the Freenode account on the bouncer with no problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Or0ku_Saki · 2012-01-31 16:21 Because most people on IRC don't want EVERYONE and their mama on IRC> The first rule of IRC. We don't talk about IRC. ...just on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 16:26 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sje46 · 2012-01-31 16:42 Blame freenode for that, not mibbit. I'd imagine that any singular most popular webclient would be banned for the same reasons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 16:46 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aidrocsid · 2012-01-31 19:41 I used to run a *tiny* IRCD and I blame Mibbit. If you don't ban Mibbit it makes it very easy for klined users to get back in. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aidrocsid · 2012-01-31 19:42 It also makes circumventing bans easy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2012-01-31 20:40 Not if the networks set up their servers properly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2012-01-31 20:41 Nope. You just didn't configure your server properly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 21:15 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 21:18 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 21:28 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-31 21:36 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cial · 2012-01-31 22:40 Ive been trying to let the other people I OP an IRC channel with let me ban mibbit :| they refuse to let me because too many legitimate users use mibbit.... Ive talked to some of the network opers about it and they said they were considering it.. That was months ago ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-01-31 22:43 I'm using my own servers on Rackspace and Amazon EC2. What service do you use? How many networks do you use? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- funknut · 2012-02-01 00:43 Hey, I've seen you on freenode before, although I think my nick was 'xid'. I think there's a plugin for various ircds that remaps the hostmask to be unique for web clients like mibbit, although I don't remember the name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 01:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Atreus11 · 2012-02-01 01:19 [Alice.](http://www.usealice.org/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 01:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Atreus11 · 2012-02-01 01:37 if you're able to have persistent storage, i'd also recommend [quassel](http://quassel-irc.org/). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 01:47 There is: [IRCCloud](https://irccloud.com/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 01:51 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 01:53 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-02-01 02:30 Interesting. I didn't know there were services that you can pay for and even more surprised that there are ones with thousands of users who do it for free. They use ZNC? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frumious · 2012-02-01 04:20 No, you shut up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 06:08 might be showing my age, but what's a bouncer and why would I want one? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 06:19 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 06:22 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 09:36 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 09:39 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nigelbabu · 2012-02-01 09:40 PM me your email if you'd like me to send you an invite. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 11:22 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nigelbabu · 2012-02-01 13:05 Heh. They might do it if you request a feature. Or you can write a browser add-on :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-02-01 15:26 Basically, the main benefit is that you can have the bouncer run permanently connected IRC sessions, which you then connect your client to. When you close your client, the session continues. You can connect to the same sessions using any client, like different computers or mobile phones, even at the same time. When you connect you can set the bouncer to replay everything that has happened since you were away, on any particular channels you specify. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_(software) http://wiki.znc.in/ZNC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- eggbean · 2012-02-01 15:30 Well, if you had more of a posting history on reddit, I would offer you an account on my server. As it is, you are a bit too 'unknown' so it seems a bit risky. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-01 18:38 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- minerva_K · 2012-02-11 06:35 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chatzilla/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-11 09:41 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ivosaurus · 2012-02-13 12:59 More people than chrome? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-13 13:10 [deleted]
