Can someone recommend a Mac IRC client? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 02:10 I use Colloquy and it sucks massively - looking for something GUI based that I can link into growl. I used to use IRSSI in my terminal, but got annoyed at not quickly being able to navigate around. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 02:12 I use ZNC as my IRC bouncer - so really anything will work with that, just trying to find a good IRC client as I use IRC heavily for work and non-work stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ceru · 2011-11-22 02:28 >IRC heavily for work Curious. How do you make use of IRC for work? I want to do this. D: Also, I recently bought a Mac (my first), and installed [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/), which I've used on both the iPad and iPhone/iPod devices. I have not given it nearly as much use yet on OSX, but I figured it is worth mentioning. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- winkwinknudge_nudge · 2011-11-22 03:06 Linkinus is pretty sweet. I highly recommend you check it out. http://conceitedsoftware.com/products/linkinus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 03:22 Thanks - yea we have a remote development staff all over the US - including the guys that work for me are also all remote. So since they're all hard core hacker guys, we use IRC to all keep in touch on topics throughout the day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 03:23 Thanks - i'll give it a go! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- archlich · 2011-11-22 03:37 xchat is ok, it's nice because settings port from linux and windows I personally use colloquy on osx ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbrosnan · 2011-11-22 03:51 * Textual - http://www.codeux.com/textual/ - downside 5 USD at the Mac store * Seen lots of good things to say about Quassel but that may be on Linux not sure how it runs on OSX http://quassel-irc.org/ * If you run Firefox or willing to setup XULrunner - Chatzilla [extension](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chatzilla/) - [Standalone](http://docs.ocf.berkeley.edu/wiki/Chatzilla_IRC_client) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kbrosnan · 2011-11-22 03:54 > Curious. How do you make use of IRC for work? I want to do this. D: Work on a open source project. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 04:02 Very True - our main product is closed source, but we've recently started to open source some of our internal tools to "give back" to the community. It's amazing how much IRC is still used in the open source world. Additionally - we have lots of bots and such that alert us on IRC when things happen in our infrastructure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ceru · 2011-11-22 04:18 Well, I'm a SysAdmin. The only open source project I'll be involved with will be on personal time. I've recommended using an IRCd for an alternative to Email communication (DR purposes) but never heard back from higher managers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2011-11-22 04:20 Textual by far. I was a big xchat fan on windows and Linux, but I found textual and it is my favourite client by a long way on any platform. Well worth the money, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ceru · 2011-11-22 04:21 I wanna check this one out as well. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2011-11-22 07:56 What was wrong with Colloquy...? Adium does IRC as well as a number of other protocols, but it's not perfect. I just use irssi... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-11-22 14:42 why can't you "navigate around" with irssi? keybinding issue with your shell? I usually recommend Colloquy, what was it's massive suck for you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 15:02 Maybe i'll have to give issri another look. I normally have one with with a bunch of tmuxes opened for diff stuff i'm working on - so it' nice to have a separate dedicated window for just IRC (which obviously i can just do with a separate terminal window. Thanks for the help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ump721 · 2011-11-22 15:45 We use IRC in our office as well. Generally there are 10 to 14 people in there which makes it easy to alert everyone to a problem, ask a question that more than one person can answer, and quickly get a dumb meme out. It's low-fi group chatting, but we've yet to find anything easier. And to answer the OP's question, people here use Limechat, Colloquy and Irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-11-22 17:36 I like Linkinus, with a ZNC bouncer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nanowire · 2011-11-22 17:56 On Mac, if you want to use quick key shortcuts in irssi in terminal such as say option+2 which gives you window 2, you need to enable "Use option as meta key" in Terminal preferences. Optionally you could also use iTerm as your terminal for irssi as it's quite a lot better in my opinion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2011-11-22 19:14 Heh, it's irssi--as in IRC. i-r-ssi. I-R-C. But yeah, I use it in a single pane of tmux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 19:35 I'll have to check that out - i'm using the google code project of iterm2 - really amazing terminal ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow_Curry · 2011-11-22 19:36 Wow - i don't think i ever picked up on that - Upvotes to you my friend! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Julio3094 · 2011-11-22 19:59 Textual > * ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-11-23 06:12 I like [Limechat](http://limechat.net/mac/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- peacebyfire · 2011-11-23 21:24 irssix ! I've been using irssi for years. I love it. As long as you can get around the .irssi/config file you're good to go. That config file works for irssix and with the added GUI of irssi, you can click around to the windows you want. http://adlr.info/?Irssix ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Extreme343GS · 2011-11-28 16:26 adium?? maybe not perfect but it interface customization is brilliant!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-12-01 04:08 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-12-06 05:19 XChat Aqua. It fits the OSX design perfectly. Never had any issues with it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swarleh · 2011-12-06 18:15 I would recommend LimeChat or Colloquy, however Colloquy is certainly better on the iOS platform than it is on OS X. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xphx · 2011-12-10 19:56 I just want to point out that Colloquy works perfectly fine with growl. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- desynch · 2011-12-11 05:34 super late to this party, but i've been using xchat aqua and macirssi as my two "go-to" irc clients. both are free, and very versatile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sonic_harmonic · 2011-12-11 16:14 Colloquy isn't too bad, however there's been very little development on it in the past couple of years. I run into a few issues with it, namely 100% CPU/unresponsiveness when reconnecting to an irc bouncer as well as no support for x509 cert client auth. The latter you can get around by using stunnel, however client cert ssl support would be nice :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yoshokatana · 2011-12-16 23:14 I looked to redownload it on a new computer, and the latest build is from 2009. :-/ I guess I could just use irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- m1ss1ontomars2k4 · 2011-12-17 01:42 Well, the app's authors seem to be working more on the mobile version these days, but there's nothing inherently wrong with an app from 2009. I mean, PuTTY is updated once every few years at most but it's everyone's favorite anyway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yoshokatana · 2011-12-21 16:34 True, and I ended up using it. I'm just worried when good developers pull a TextMate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Venia · 2011-12-26 03:15 Adium is pretty good, but my go-to client is irssi with tmux. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MJ94 · 2011-12-31 21:56 [Textual](http://www.codeux.com/textual/) is the best client I have used to date. Open source, free and actively developed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- go4it7arh · 2012-01-13 05:08 [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/) is what I've decided is the best. I've tried [Colloquy](http://colloquy.info/), [Xchat Aqua](http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/), [Textual](http://www.codeux.com/textual/), MacIrssi, [irssi](http://irssi.org/) in a terminal over ssh, emulating Windows for mIRC, and a few others, but [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/) is by far the best. I've styled it to look like my irssi, somewhat, and have irssi running in screen on my server with irssi-proxy, so that I can connect from my phone and LimeChat on my Mac. My main gripe with [Textual](http://www.codeux.com/textual/) is that it's a fork of [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/), and that [its code is available](https://github.com/Codeux/Textual/), and anyone can compile it. They're selling something that's completely free and open source for money. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-01-26 15:52 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adarmatic · 2012-02-21 19:13 Textual is free too, they have the source @ http://www.codeux.com/textual/ and you can compile it yourself. Takes 5 seconds. Textual is superior to LimeChat in every way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2012-02-27 06:37 [deleted]
