Is there a peer-to-peer-esque IRC client? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- microchip08 · 2011-09-04 18:20 Currently, I'm using Quassel, with its nifty client/core setup -- so that as long as my desktop PC is on, all my other devices can connect to the same IRC session. Now, this is quite cool, until I want to turn my PC off. What I'd like is a client that maintains the session regardless of whether the server is up or not: so that I can turn my computer off, and my laptop will remain connected, and then can connect another computer to my laptop and the session remains intact. Is there a cross-platform client that will do that? Google evades me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaolbrec · 2011-09-04 18:23 I *think* Quassel can run the core on a server, so you could connect to it from any client machine. More commonly, people use irssi and screen/tmux on a *nix server, then ssh into it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- microchip08 · 2011-09-04 18:36 Yes, it can. But I never have a device that is on all the time, so being able to switch which device is acting as a server on-the-fly would be useful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-09-04 18:44 You can sign up for a bouncer and then connect to that from all of your clients: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_(software) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2011-09-04 20:00 You could rent out a cheap unix shell (there are those that specifically sell them as "IRC Shells" and run your own BNC software on that, then you connect to that BNC and resume your session. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaolbrec · 2011-09-04 22:07 Then you want the impossible.. Like turning the ignition off in the car but still being able to drive. As others have suggested, you're going to have to take advantage of an external service that's always on. Blinkenshell do free shell accounts, for instance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Superhenk · 2011-09-05 00:07 That is technically impossible. Once a failover is made from device A to device B, the connection to the IRC server will drop. You will either need a device that is always on, or an account on a server that is always on. I use both. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xbris · 2011-09-05 03:32 with bg processes?! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2011-09-05 07:01 That being said, I recommend ZNC. It's tits. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kaolbrec · 2011-09-05 09:08 Yes? I have weechat running in tmux. The website tells you what the usage terms are. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- murmlei · 2011-09-05 18:35 Why not just run irssi in a screen, no bnc needed ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DRW_ · 2011-09-05 19:21 Because not everyone likes irssi. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-09-06 05:05 Wow, that is pretty sweet. Thanks for the tip! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnnyFreakingDanger · 2011-09-07 12:51 uTorrent has a new p2p chat client that might be worth looking into. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tidux · 2011-12-28 19:35 That's where a *nix shell on a remote system comes in handy. It's not your device you have to leave on.
