I'm new to #reddit: Does this exist, if not do you want it? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 07:54 As I said I'm new to reddit irc and wrote a little xchat bot in python which does this: !redditor someone someone- link karma: 325441 - comment karma: 212344 - redditor since: Fri, 06 Jul 2008 (UTC) Not sure if something like this already exists, or if someone would even want that. Tell me more. Edit: Ok, so I installed the bot in my xchat, when you see me online, just try it out. ;) **Edit2:** Well, I got banned of #reddit by "bburhans", seems like things like this are not wanted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SquareBanana · 2011-09-02 08:27 Sounds fairly useful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-09-02 13:14 ++someone ---------------------------------------------------------------------- madmav · 2011-09-02 15:41 who are you and what are you trying to do to our redditalien? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 16:57 It#s live and very much in alpha, try it out. ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 16:58 You mean make "++someone" the command? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 16:58 Nobody evil and nothing at all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SquareBanana · 2011-09-02 17:17 Unfortunately I am IRC-illiterate. I would, however, love to try this out so; how would I go about doing so? Other than freenode's webchat I have essentially no experience of IRC so please explain in Layman's terms... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 17:22 I'm in he channel now, just join with webchat and type: !redditor SquareBanana ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SquareBanana · 2011-09-02 17:59 Wow just tried it, thanks! Is the query or response visible to anyone else? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Anthaneezy · 2011-09-02 18:45 gitarrbot was kicked from #Reddit by bburhans [appeal to bburhans] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-02 18:47 Yea, with that he banned me too. It's clearly not wanted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-09-02 21:06 Generally, the rule in the channel is no talking bots. There is a reddit plugin for the official bot, but it does need some work. I'd link to it, but i'm on my phone. It lives on github, and was written by KeyserSosa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2011-09-02 21:09 Bots that speak are generally prohibited in large channels unless you have authorization of the ops. They can get /very/ spammy and triggered ones like yours are easily abused. I banned you by host, which is standard operating procedure on #reddit, and you were caught in the ban. You are, of course, welcome back, so long as you don't bring any bot that A.) captures logs for the purpose of publishing them, or B.) speaks unless you have my consent. Sorry about that, and I hope this doesn't deter you from participating! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- liquoranwhores · 2011-09-02 23:21 this would be more useful in a private message imo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2011-09-02 23:55 I know there's was a supybot plugin for the bot in the CHANNEL THAT CANNOT BE NAMED, that worked really well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- venuism · 2011-09-03 00:37 IRC sure is serious. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-09-03 00:51 Sekret chan eh? Sounds like faggotry to me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edman007 · 2011-09-03 02:13 #/r/nyc has had this for a while with their bot: !reddit edman007 User: edman007 Link Karma: 106 (0.09 per day) Comment Karma: 2801 (2.45 per day) Redditor for 3 year(s) and 47 day(s). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schwede · 2011-09-03 03:25 Or "someone?" ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-09-03 04:44 I suspect its the same plugin. I had trouble with it in the past, but perhaps it works better now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2011-09-03 04:51 I don't see how it could work bad. Fetching the karma of a user is a small task. Maybe I'll look into what one it was. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-09-03 04:53 Last time i ran it it caused the bot to crash. But that could have been a conflict between it and the url snarfer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aperson · 2011-09-03 05:16 I saw there's that one reddit plugin that chromakode wrote (I think - but his didn't do karma, it just parsed reddit urls). I know jrabbit wrote this: https://github.com/jrabbit/ubotu- fr/tree/2371aa89a85560fe6321a5b8ac6fc4d39b1de320/plugins/Reddit Which should work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-09-03 05:18 Ah, thanks. The one I was referring to was the Chromakode/KeyserSosa one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gitarr · 2011-09-03 05:48 You know, the way you kick ban is a bit odd in my opinion: You were not identifiable as an op when you told me the bot is forbidden and when you asked me to respond, you gave me very little time, maybe 20 seconds. I was speaking in another channel so I was late to respond, but I did. But all talk or discussion ended in a very one-sided manner, with a kick/ban by host. There were other ops (or at least oped users) in the channel before, even trying out the bot, having no problem with the existance of it. I also could not find any of those rules in the sidebar links, otherwise I wouldn't even have brought the bot. The channel topic as far as I can remember said something about spam bots, which I consider mine not to be one of. In my prior life as ircop on some networks I learned to give people time and not to kick/ban/gline left and right if it's not really necessary. This will give a much more relaxed and adult athmosphere in the, channels. My little script surely didn't spam the channel, it was no immediate threat. Of course it also had a timer on top to make it impossible to abuse it to spam. But hey, I get it, it's your channel, you make the rules and I am fine with them. You could have just identified yourself as an op, told me the bot/script is forbidden and I would have made it it quit in no time. Easy resolution, everybody happy. Kick/banning without giving proper time to respond leaves a bad taste. But all that said, I am too old to hold grudges so I sure will be back in the channel, of course without the bot, provided my host is unbanned next time I try to join. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-09-03 06:57 Hell, any public reddit community outside of reddit itself is serious business. The Minecraft server ops are just as draconian in their policies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2011-09-03 07:56 In the 120-second span before the bot was kicked, 5 people used !redditor, which adds 2 unwelcome lines (one for the request, one for the response) to the channel for each use; this quickly reduced the signal-to-noise ratio dramatically. As I explained, I did not at all mean to kick you - your hostmask matched the default banmask format, and so the kickban affected you. I promptly removed the ban and invited you back into the channel. I am glad to hear that you don't hold grudges. If people weren't trying to use it constantly, I would've left a lot more time for you to respond before I removed it from the channel - and had I had the time to check that its hostname matched yours, I would've manually applied a ban against its nick only, rather than your hostname. I'm sure you understand my reasoning and the nature of that mistake. I'm sorry that one of your first experiences on #reddit was a somewhat sour one. If there's anything we can do to improve that more than your above suggestions, you're always free to PM me (bburhans) and let me know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2011-09-03 07:58 Regarding another point you made: #reddit ops do not wear their +o per freenode guidelines (which boil down to "at the end of the day, we're all users, and we don't go around waving our metaphorical weapons when we don't need to"). Those guidelines are elaborated on [here](http://freenode.net/channel_guidelines.shtml). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- benburhans · 2011-09-03 08:00 The response was in the same format as the request - e.g. when you asked for !redditor info on-channel via public message, it responded on-channel via public message. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xianas · 2011-09-07 23:16 I've never been there, but #Reddit sounds like a truly worthless pit of fun-sucking douchebaggery. Real IRC users don't Ban, they AFK. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dsi1 · 2011-09-07 23:25 He +1'd "someone". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xianas · 2011-09-07 23:45 And in my IRC channel, I have a solution to kickwars: We are all OP, and we are all Protected. You want to kick? Fine, you also get kicked. :) Everybody has to rejoin. Not only that but we're all friends too, so that helps. Oh yeah and I forgot, we aren't reincarnated officers from the Nazi regime. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- januszeal · 2011-09-15 10:07 You will find freenode is the most serious network on earth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- swarleh · 2011-12-06 18:23 Most bots in channels (that you don't own) must be ok'd if not, the bot should reply to triggers in private messages or have a large timer so that it will not be triggered multiple times. For example, if an eggdrop bot ever joins my channels, it, as well as its owner are banned forever. Talkative bots are the bane of my existance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-12-06 18:26 [deleted]
