Anyone connecting to IRC using Adium? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borgqueen2373 · 2011-04-19 01:51 I know Mac users don't usually use IRC (or at least not in my experience), but I wanted to start up, and I was looking for some help using IRC with Adium. Anyone? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gefahr · 2011-04-19 04:14 i use pidgin, which is adium's win32 counterpart. what's the question(s)? if you want you can msg me on irc.. er. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Paradox · 2011-04-19 05:16 You can, but on larger channels it can be a real pain in the ass, depending on what theme you choose. Personally, I recommend [Linkinus](http://www.conceitedsoftware.com/linkinus) (its also available in the AppStore), but if you don't want to pay, try [Textual](http://www.codeux.com/textual/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- no_numbers_here · 2011-04-19 06:03 Well, as a mac and linux user I tend to recommend terminal based apps like irssi and weechat and would be glad to help you get those working. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tm258 · 2011-04-19 11:28 I used to use Adium, but not for IRC. Honestly, I would recomend [Colloqoy](http://colloquy.info/). It's a very easy to use and pretty IRC client. That's what I used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borgqueen2373 · 2011-04-19 15:10 I figured it out. Thank you though! :] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- willhopkins · 2011-04-20 00:53 Adium keeps making itself my default, but it's not that useful. Linkinus is my first choice, Textual my second, and Colloquy my third. Linkinus is well worth the cash, but you can't beat Colloquy's free. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- teejmya · 2011-04-26 20:18 Yeah, I do use Adium. Had to find the right theme though. If I'm on two or more channels, I use Textual (http://www.codeux.com/textual/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-04-30 08:19 The only thing I don't like in Colloquy is that by default it uses your real name while connecting to chat. You have to manually rectify it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tm258 · 2011-04-30 14:10 Oh, I don't think I even knew that. I think remember being annoyed that it was hard to find the SSL option or something. But for the average user, i think it's great. Beautiful interface. Makes it easy to get started. It helped get my fiancée on IRC. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nnarcosis130 · 2011-05-22 04:34 I use X-Chat aqua which is a solid bet. I think its based of the windows version x-chat, but I am just putting 2 and 2 together with the names. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-05-31 12:32 irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-05-31 12:33 irssi is awesome a good alternative would be macirssi - i ve now got email twitter and irc all in the terminal - id just love an rss reader too but cant find one that will install with Homebrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kenada · 2011-06-02 08:09 Did you install irssi from homebrew aswell? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-06-02 09:07 Brew install irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- enthalpy3 · 2011-06-04 21:39 I recommend xchat-aqua it's not as fancy as some of the other clients but very customizable and works well when you have a large number of channels. Irssi is also a great choice but there's a learning curve with the terminal stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InsaneCanadian · 2011-06-19 22:03 I can't help you with Adium, but I recommend that you try [LimeChat](http://limechat.net/mac/). I really don't see why no one recommends it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-07-23 15:50 Get Irssi or Macirssi. Adium is not up to it for irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-07-23 15:51 Irssi ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pooh_Bear · 2011-08-12 07:39 I use Adium, and I like it so far. If you need help with it, let me know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avree · 2011-08-22 00:26 Colloquy is pretty good too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DPaluche · 2011-09-08 21:09 For those who haven't figured it out, here's how to get on #reddit using Adium: 1. File > Add Account > IRC 2. Choose a nickname. Put "irc.freenode.net" in the Hostname field 3. Hit "OK" 4. File > Join Group Chat 5. Choose "irc.freenode.net" as the account, enter "#reddit" as the channel 6. Hit "OK" 7. Enjoy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- knuxgen · 2011-10-04 00:44 You can try http://www.trillian.im/mac/ which might work better for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thedrub · 2011-10-25 21:27 Any idea why I get this error? I cannot get connected to irc.freenode.net as a result, so cannot "Join Group Chat". Double drat. "Your selected account name was rejected by the server. It probably contains invalid characters." The account name is all alpha. Those wouldn't be invalid, certainly.
