If somebody does a whois on me, will the server tell me that the other person just did that? reddit / irc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2011-01-13 19:40 Will it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hadhad69 · 2011-01-13 20:13 no ---------------------------------------------------------------------- battmutler · 2011-01-13 20:14 Not normally, no. There are admin modes that will allow this, but nothing for average joes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HenkPoley · 2011-01-13 21:28 You can, if you [own the top level domain](http://en.wikipedia.org/wik i/Whois#Server_advertisement_in_DNS) ;-) Edit: Err.. this is in /r/irc.. different type of 'whois' :P (but interesting nontheless) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NefariousParity · 2011-01-20 17:52 If you are a IRC operator. It tells you. Meaning someone who is a operator exclusively to the server or network. Not just a Channel Operator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- optize · 2011-01-22 17:11 Not always, it depends on the type of IRC server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- enthreeoh · 2011-02-13 12:37 It's been like 10 years since I was an ircop but I think it was a usermode flag that could only be set for certain user levels. Pretty much what you said I guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unfocusedriot · 2011-02-23 16:16 Yeah, quite a few ircd's (the program running on the irc server) will have flags that Opers can set to inform you of being whois'd, and most that don't have a module that allows it. As for the typical user, you don't get those warnings. A lot of servers, including freenode, will obscure your IP address in the whois request. Freenode does however include parts of your hostname, so it can be possible to find out your ISP or general overall region or state that you live in. All other information available from a whois is the information that you provided when logging onto the server or in your irc client's preferences (username, real name, etc...)
