Minidlna dependencies reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2023-12-26 21:07 Hi, I was in intending to setup a minimal media server using freebsd 14. Post install I ran "pkg install minidlna" and was shocked to see that 83 files would need to be downloaded and post the install, an additional 433mb would be used. For a such a simple program, how come the dependency list is so large? I had a quick scan of the list and it included packages such as Wayland etc. even though I completed a bare bones minimal install using "FreeBSD-14.0-RELEASE-amd64-mini-memstick.img.xz". When I check the ports details at "[https://www.freshports.org/net/min idlna/](https://www.freshports.org/net/minidlna/)", there are just a handfull of dependencies. Is this level of dependency baggage normal when installing from packages? Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DimestoreProstitute · 2023-12-26 22:09 It uses ffmpeg to scan media files, which brings-in most of those dependences ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2023-12-26 22:26 Hi, thanks for your reply. It looks the ports page calls out libavformat.so as a dependency, which I believe is included with ffmpeg. How come all of ffmpeg is pulled in as a dependency instead of just installing libavformat.so? Presumably ffmpeg will have its own dependencies and so on, which means a lot of bloat just for one simple program. Is there a way to install a package and only the required libraries or must entire package dependency balls always be included? I am trying to keep the system lean and avoid any unnecessary bloat if possible! Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DimestoreProstitute · 2023-12-26 22:30 You could compile your own ffmpeg that limits what else it brings in... I use minidlna myself on a lean (3GB) custom NAS and thought about that myself, though now I don't see the default ffmpeg as bloat since I've used many of its ancillary functions to fix media files stored on it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirror176 · 2023-12-27 00:03 Instead of packages, if you build+install from ports then many ports have options which impact dependencies which lets you get a leaner copy. Sometimes ports have flavors which can reduce dependencies brought in; if the package installed is a flavor with reduced dependencies then you get that benefit as a pkg user. There may be a few packages with reduced dependencies as the upcoming support for subpackages starts getting used but I think that was still more intended for reducing multiple ports being present for its various common build variations instead of dependencies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-12-28 17:16 % cd net/minidlna % make pretty-print-run-depends-list This port requires package(s) "Imath-3.1.9 aom-3.8.0_2 argp- standalone-1.5.0 brotli-1.1.0,1 dav1d-1.3.0 expat-2.5.0 ffmpeg-6.1_4,1 flac-1.4.3,1 fontconfig-2.14.2,1 freetype2-2.13.2 fribidi-1.0.13 gdk- pixbuf2-2.42.10_1 gettext-runtime-0.22.3 giflib-5.2.1 glib-2.78.3,2 gmp-6.3.0 gnutls-3.7.10 graphite2-1.3.14 harfbuzz-8.3.0 highway-1.0.7 icu-74.2,1 indexinfo-0.3.1 jbigkit-2.1_1 jpeg-turbo-3.0.1 lame-3.100_4 lcms2-2.16 libX11-1.8.7,1 libXau-1.0.9 libXdmcp-1.1.3 libXext-1.3.4,1 libXfixes-6.0.0 libXrandr-1.5.2 libXrender-0.9.10_2 libass-0.17.1_1 libdeflate-1.19 libdrm-2.4.119,1 libedit-3.1.20230828,1 libepoll- shim-0.0.20230411 libexif-0.6.24 libffi-3.4.4 libiconv-1.17 libid3tag-0.16.2 libidn2-2.3.4 libjxl-0.9.0 liblz4-1.9.4,1 libogg-1.3.5,4 libpciaccess-0.17 libplacebo-6.338.1 libtasn1-4.19.0 libudev-devd-0.5.2 libunibreak-5.1,1 libunistring-1.1 libunwind-20230730 libv4l-1.23.0_2 libva-2.20.0_1 libvdpau-1.5 libvorbis-1.3.7_2,3 libvpx-1.13.1 libx264-0.164.3095 libxcb-1.15_1 libxml2-2.10.4_2 mpdecimal-2.5.1 nettle-3.9.1 openexr-3.2.1 opus-1.4 p11-kit-0.25.3 pcre2-10.42 png-1.6.40 python39-3.9.18 readline-8.2.7 shaderc-2023.7 shared-mime-info-2.2_1 sqlite3-icu-3.44.0_1,1 svt- av1-1.8.0 tiff-4.4.0_2 vmaf-3.0.0 vulkan-loader-1.3.274 wayland-1.22.0 webp-1.3.2 x265-3.5_1 xorgproto-2023.2 xxhash-0.8.2 zstd-1.5.5" to run. % Reference: [ports\(7\)](https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=port s&sektion=7&manpath=freebsd-release) Maybe more user-friendly: (expires one month from now).
