No gui daily driver reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalkingGundam · 2023-12-26 00:40 I'm thinking of using freebsd with no gui as a daily driver, but I like to watch YouTube videos what are my options if any? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CjKing2k · 2023-12-26 00:58 FreeBSD on your PC, Youtube on your TV ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalkingGundam · 2023-12-26 01:01 Not helpful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CjKing2k · 2023-12-26 01:03 I'm not sure what kind of answer you were expecting. The two are kind of in conflict with each other. Do you want a minimal GUI instead? There are plenty of those to choose from. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mmm-harder · 2023-12-26 01:08 displaying video requires a graphical interface layer, but that doesn't imply that you have to interact with the user interface elements of a DE. you could run the following: Xorg + twm + gpu accelerated terminal with img/vid plugin. https://mathis.petrovich.fr/tiv-video/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CatPasswd · 2023-12-26 01:35 Yeah, the time of the CLI-only interface is long gone. You will be hard pressed to accomplish anything using a Lynx browser and irssi. I doubt you could even open a web-based email service with Lynx any longer. If you're building a desktop, you need a gui. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sp0rk173 · 2023-12-26 01:40 Never done it myself but here’s a good place to start: https://man.fre ebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=fbdev&sektion=4&apropos=0&manpath=X11R7.2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2023-12-26 01:48 If your local console is a frame-buffer interface, you could use `ytdl`/`youtube_dl` (I recommend [downloading/installing source](https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl) because it's a constantly-moving target). This gets the video+audio locally and then some programs can play videos back on a framebuffer. FWIW, I spend a *lot* of my time in the terminal (pretty much everything except web-browsing, PDF-viewing, and `rdesktop` for `$DAYJOB`) and given the choice would largely live there. But those three areas are my sticking point preventing me from driving without a GUI full-time. So instead I run X with `fluxbox` as my window- manager, and most windows are configured to run full-screen without window-chrome which is pretty close to the same thing. As an added bonus, I have a much wider selection of fonts and can fit a lot more text on the screen than the limited 80x25 (or 80x50) in most consoles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- infostud · 2023-12-26 02:01 I run a vanilla VNC X-Serve running twm with four Xterms I use via a VNC viewer on Windows and macOS. I daily drive Emacs with org-mode and whatever tool on one of these platforms that is appropriate for the job. WSL is sometimes appropriate. What am I doing today? Playing with AI agents. Ollama LLM running on macOS. LangChain running on FreeBSD. I managed to get PyTorch compiled on FreeBSD. Later I’ll play Elder Scrolls on Windows or maybe Zelda: TotK on a Switch. I haven’t done a no-gui daily driver since VAX/VMS but have done a lot of living on the command line (DECTerms, Amiga, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Linux, and macOS) in the past 30 years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bubba2_13 · 2023-12-26 06:08 yes, easily done. freebsd works well in tty, just use yt-dlp to download videos, and mpv to play videos. works like a charm without gui ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mr_ambiguity · 2023-12-26 06:08 Your question is aka asking how do I see if I don't have eyes. While technically you may be able to "see" but that would be classified as a different kind of vision. For PC YouTube goes hand in hand with browsers which exist in a desktop environment. So the answer to your question is you don't have any options. That is not to say it isn't possible. Having said that a long time ago I used mplayer to play a movie on my tty0 on a Linux machine. Look into frame buffers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bubba2_13 · 2023-12-26 06:09 wrong. mpv plays videos in tty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Lee_B_ · 2023-12-26 10:47 Log in at the console, run xinit if you need a graphical environment, exit back to the console when done. You can get fully used to terminal tools, and use them at both the console, and in an Xterm, depending on which environment you're in at the time. Or you can even launch single X (and possibly wayland?) GUI apps (say, firefox) and exit back to the console when you quit then. I've been thinking about this too. Oddly enough, since trying FreeBSD again after years. I think there's something about the BSD console that feels solid and reliable and makes me want to use it more :) But there's probably also something about it just being hard to get FreeBSD to run a desktop properly. All that said, I'd strongly encourage you to try (long enough to get used to) i3wm or sway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neozahikel · 2023-12-26 11:02 Haven't tried it but usually my answer to someone that tries to do advanced WM-like actions in the CLI is the good old Emacs. And there is a plugin that seems to do exactly what you want : [https: //github.com/isamert/empv.el](https://github.com/isamert/empv.el) Please if you use it tell us how efficient it is, I'm curious! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-12-26 13:02 Follow-up: - [Ok let me rephrase : freebsd](https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comm ents/18qwldm/ok_let_me_rephrase/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WalkingGundam · 2023-12-26 13:18 I bought a Celeron with 4 gigs of ram and 64 gig emmc, and want to make the most of it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Asystole · 2023-12-26 14:34 You're literally asking for the impossible buddy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-12-26 15:06 > impossible See earlier comments, such as: - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- phosix · 2023-12-26 16:59 >You will be hard pressed to accomplish anything using a Lynx browser and irssi. Yes , lynx has been outdated for some time, but elinks handles most modern web interfaces just fine, in my experience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WoomyUnitedToday · 2023-12-26 19:27 I don’t know of any way to browse the internet with JavaScript withiut a GUI. I guess if you wanted you could just install xorg, xterm, and like a super basic window manager, like twm or mwm or something and a fairly minimal web browser. Or if you really wanted to you could just use xorg without a WM solely for watching YouTube, you would have to ctrl-c your web browser to close it, but that’s the closest you are going to get to watching YouTube without a GUI without significantly inconveniencing yourself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirror176 · 2023-12-27 00:46 Though I prefer a lot more space and RAM, you should be able to make something nice out of that. You could likely even find a usable experience with a bloated GUI+modern bloated browser. With the lower amount of RAM, you likely want to stay with packages instead of ports but if not then I'd recommend no parallel make within those builds and if using poudriere then no parallel building of ports and leaving more of the build to the drive instead of RAM. Looking into lighter GUI options can save a good amount of RAM. Lighter browsers help too, as does content blockers like ublock origin (and more-so if willing to 'fight' with blocking scripts on websites whenever possible). If tasks 'require' more memory, consider putting swap on a different drive. I haven't looked much but when using terminal based browsers I haven't had success on modern bloated websites like youtube. As the main problem is javascript, you can get a bit further using 3rd party instances such as those running individious. At that point, you would want to take a video link and run it through yt-dlp then mplayer/mpv/etc. to watch it on a terminal. If using regularly and not planning to keep the videos, I'd look into ways to pass the content straight to the player without putting it on disk, setting up a RAM disk for it, writing it to removable media. I hadn't heard about elinks until this thread but that sounds promising to have more websites supported. My repeated pushes to external media are based around my experiences with eMMC =non-replaceable (bga soldered to motherboard) drive with performance that feels like a slow magnetic (as opposed to a decent performance magnetic). The small space may or may not work for you but I don't put a lot of trust in the durability of the storage; even if durable, its built to bring the machine down on failure if external memory was not already planned as workable. Most of my eMMC experience has been as a technician with customers that had laptops (usually called netbooks) with 32GB eMMC drives (reports as 28.5GB-ish usable) and Windows 10 failing to update whether it was out of the box or after customers added data; after extensive work (takes days), early on I was able to get over 20GB of free space though in my last attempts before I lost my job it was closer to 12GB free on a clean+updated Windows 10 install. Never had the chance to try FreeBSD on one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EmployMaterial5108 · 2023-12-27 05:43 I mean idk about a "no gui" daily driver, with an ability to watch YouTube, but you could go with an extremely minimal window manager such as a vanilla dwm. I want to say there is a way to use emacs as a wm as well, but no idea on that process.
