FreeBSD has spoiled me! reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ImageJPEG · 2023-12-25 23:40 I'm moving my gaming computer from FreeBSD 14 to Gentoo so I can play games without dinking around with Linuxulator. It works fantastic for some games but it's just not there yet. When that time comes where I can finally play Cities: Skylines and GTA V with Proton on FreeBSD, I'm swapping back in a heartbeat. My main issue I'm having is finding config files and minor issues that build up over time. I'm currently using Gentoo in a VM to refresh my memory (been almost 10 years since I last used it). I'm definitely keeping FreeBSD on my laptop, however. It's just too good to not use! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trick_Algae5810 · 2023-12-26 00:43 I can’t even get a desktop environment to work with FreeBSD but I still run it in Hyper-V all the time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ImageJPEG · 2023-12-26 00:45 FreeBSD + Xfce is pretty great. I'm trying to get KDE to work on Gentoo as I'm going to give that a shot now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FreeBSDfan · 2023-12-26 01:06 In comparison, I *was* a FreeBSD committer working on GNOME packages specifically, and I switched to Linux. Why? FreeBSD drivers, especially on desktops, are trash. FreeBSD is used in some parts of my personal setup, namely my OPNsense firewall and Samba AD server, but that on a Rocky Linux 9 hypervisor. I do get tempted by OpenBSD every few months, always get disappointed and end up liking Fedora/Rocky better but then forget and try OBSD again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ImageJPEG · 2023-12-26 01:10 I've never had any issues, whatsoever, with drivers on FreeBSD. Which is interesting because I use it all the time on my T590, and still currently on my gaming computer (switching that this Christmas break). Not dismissing your issues, I've just been lucky, I guess. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- StupidWittyUsername · 2023-12-26 03:52 I like FreeBSD precisely because I don't much care about desktop environments, beyond FVWM and a pile of Xterms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whattteva · 2023-12-26 05:37 >I'm moving my gaming computer from FreeBSD 14 to Gentoo so I can play games without dinking around with Linuxulator. I mean... I don't even see the point with Linux for me really. I play almost exclusively online competitive games which require anti cheat and even Linux sucks in that department. I just keep separate FreeBSD workstation and Windows gaming machines. It's just way less headaches that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ottdmk · 2023-12-26 07:14 I don't do much gaming. FreeBSD+KF5 is a great desktop though. My only complaint is browser performance: when I'm using Foundry for online Pathfinder 2e games I need to switch to my Linux partition (OpenSuSe Leap 15.5) ; on FreeBSD the JavaScript performance just isn't there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- k3nrap · 2023-12-26 07:15 I just keep a dedicated machine for gaming on Windows only while having my main machine run FreeBSD for the rest of my computing. At this point, I keep things simple by having a USB hub switch and a Display Port switch for one of my monitors, both which act as a "modular" KVM switch for both machines and also to avoid issues that a KVM switch can have. With this setup, I can have my other monitors still display my FreeBSD KDE Plasma session and can easily switch back to it with the USB switch if I need to quickly run a task while I'm gaming. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Who1sThatGuyAnyway · 2023-12-26 07:43 I got hyprland working quite easily. It just required sorting out graphic drivers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- desnudopenguino · 2023-12-26 19:00 I used to run a 3-4 monitor setup, where each monitor was a different computer. There was a FOSS tool that let you set up a seamless passthrough between the different machines, so you didnt have to mess with a physical kvm. You just move the mosuse tongue next monitor, and the machine picked up the I/O. I wish I could remember tha name, but I used it on windows, freebsd, openbsd, and debian iirc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ImageJPEG · 2023-12-26 20:03 I don’t play competitively and I refuse to personally use windows on my personal hardware with the ever more invasive spying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- littlelowcougar · 2023-12-26 20:24 I use Synergy to do that. Don’t think it’s FOSS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whattteva · 2023-12-26 22:49 So you don't use an iPhone or an Android or any Google services? I find it hard to believe that people these days can avoid to use any of those outside of the real hermits like Richard Stallman. Finally, if you're worried about spying on a machine that you're just using exclusively for gaming and nothing else... I think you've got bigger problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LordInateur · 2023-12-27 03:46 [sysutils/barrier](https://www.freshports.org/sysutils/barrier/) is the one that I use. The only downside is that it's not super great when you want to put your Machine A monitor(s) in the middle of your Machine B monitors, for example--monitors for designated machines pretty much need to be grouped for the cursor to transition seamlessly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ImageJPEG · 2023-12-27 06:50 I don’t use Google and I do have an iPhone but it’s not always on me either. I would like to get a phone that can run Graphene OS. I just don’t like Windows anymore because it wasn’t always this way. I expect to have privacy on my own computer. So no, not like RMS, I expect websites to track me but I don’t expect my OS to do so. And I don’t use my computer exclusively for gaming. It just happens to be the most powerful computer I have that I also game on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- k3nrap · 2023-12-27 09:18 Well, I'd have to say that your suggestion with regards to Synergy and Barrier as your repliers have mentioned, inspired me to come up with making a clipboard sharing project, which is what I really lack, by using a message broker system like RabbitMQ. I still prefer my approach because I still want to be able to use all of my monitors for FreeBSD, hence the Display Port switcher for the one monitor out of the others. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whattteva · 2023-12-28 23:02 Don't get me wrong. I get your concern, but I"m just wondering why you're singling out Windows/Microsoft, when this is basically standard practice for all big tech companies including Google and Apple. I mean heck, even Ubuntu's Canonical do this, so I just feel like the Windows might be getting more hate unfairly here.
