Neovim Mason and clangd reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-25 16:48 Hello All, Curious if anyone has been able to get clangd LSP support in Neovim functional. I get a "The current platform is unsupported" message but I haven't been able to determine if its simply config related or if there is something in the plugin itself that is actually not supported. Running 14-STABLE and have tried pointing to v15/v16/v17 of clangd with no change. Beginning to assume its just not supported within the plugin itself, but thought I would throw this out there in case someone has been successful with it. Thank you! Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnalystNo9889 · 2023-12-25 17:54 It is Mason plugin issue. Mason is very Linux centric and doesn't care about FreeBSD. When I wanted to use it, I set it up under Linux VM then copied its folder structure to the FreeBSD then overwrote all pulled binaries with appropriate FreeBSD ones (you can symlink also). But it is very dirty hack. After awhile I gave up and switched to Helix and never look back. Helix is using LSP servers which is installed in the system instead of downloading it itself to its own config folder. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-25 19:31 Ahhh.. thank you for confirming. I also have this same configuration working in Debian system so I was pretty sure it was at the plugin level but I was hoping it was just a simple config issue. Your comments sound like you've spent a significant amount of time trying to get it working. If you could pull things in from Linux it also points towards the devs not concerning themselves with FreeBSD than a incompatibility issue and Mason is pretty integral to that eco-system which is disheartening. My Emacs configuration works fine with clangd so I might just switch back to using it. Been experimenting with neovim lately but if it has a lot of Linux specific code, its not going to last for the long term for me I suspect. Thanks again! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnalystNo9889 · 2023-12-25 19:38 You are more than welcome! BTW VS Code does the same on FreeBSD. If you try to install some plugins (e.g. rust-analyzer), it will install a Linux version and will fail to start. So it is unfortunately not only Mason issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-25 19:49 Good to know! Unfortunately more and more I'm seeing Linux specific code out there with the BSDs pretty much falling by the wayside. I've been using FreeBSD since 2.2.8 I think was my first install, went through grad school during the 4.x years and did everything in it... now sadly its getting harder and harder to do so on the desktop. Its cool to see Linux taking off like it has been the past few years, I just would like to see similar popularity with the unixs as well. I fall back to Debian when I have to and that is becoming more and more the case as time passes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnalystNo9889 · 2023-12-25 19:56 Yeah, fully agree with you. Honestly I prefer when any tool is trying to be as OS agnostic as possible but it's just a dream. It is not a very big effort to make things compatible with Linux and \*BSD at the same time. Done that professionally. But the situation is not as bad as it seems. Most of the time FreeBSD Linux Compatibility helps a lot. If it is properly configured, often those Linux binaries just simply works and you don't even notice it. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- solochris · 2023-12-25 20:04 No need to use Mason. Just set it up with lspconfig and make sure you have clangd in your path. If that doesn’t work you can point to the clangd binary in the setup of clangd server. Works like a charm for me. FreeBSD 13.2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-25 20:12 Yeah, I should probably take a look at turning linux compatibility back on. I haven't used it in a while so it might be time to revisit things there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-25 20:15 Thank you, I will definitely look into giving that a shot as well. That's what Emacs does at the end of the day and its working fine there so I know clangd is fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snaffu100 · 2023-12-26 18:24 Just following up on this that this method worked like a charm in case someone runs into this thread in the future. I just removed the attempt to auto load in Mason and configured it manually in the lspconfig. Thanks again!
