Very hot temperatures on T440p? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siibn_ara · 2023-06-25 20:27 Hi ive recently installed FreeBSD 13.2 on my T440p and the temperatures are 5-9 degrees celsius highter then on my linux installation. The performance is as good as with linux. Is this normal? Are there any tweaks/fixes that i can do to cool down the t440p a bit? I really like FreeBSD and would like to use it as my MainOS. :) EDIT: thanks to all helpers! Using powerd++ actually helped a lot! Now the temperatures are sane and even better than on linux while watching videos. Also the fan-curve is better then on linux. So i will stay on FreeBSD! :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-25 23:18 `sysrc powerd_enable` Is [powerd\(8\)](https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=powerd&sekt ion=8&manpath=freebsd-release) enabled? Other things might allow cooler running, but I think of powerd first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lenzo1337 · 2023-06-26 04:21 Making sure the the right modules are loaded would be my first stop. The t440p has versions with a dGPU and without, the igpus are also dependent on the cpu so if you have a i7-4800mq or i7-4910mq it will require the appropriate modules. As for the software for controlling it powerd++ utility is what I'm currently running on my t440p to handle throttling and it's been working well on it for a couple of years at this point. But yes the fan curve that the T440p uses by default when using FreeBSD isn't great imho, at the same time I haven't found a way to adjust it that works. If you want to have better cooling performance I would advise buying a tiny diaphragm pump and some silicone tubing, Then you can solder small diameter copper in the same locations where the OEM heatpipes are. If you use even a single 80mm radiator externally it's enough to keep it cool under load. The big issue is making sure you keep the fan plugged into the controller still; as the system won't boot if a fan isn't connected to the pin header. can be a bit messy though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siibn_ara · 2023-06-26 05:03 No. I will try it after work. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- siibn_ara · 2023-06-26 05:08 I have the dGPU version (but disabled the GPU in coreboot). My CPU is a i7-4702mq. Stupid question, but how can i find out the right/appropriate modules for my cpu? Powerd++ is a powerd replacement right? For (a bit) additional cooling i am planning to do a heatpipe mod by adding a additional heatpipe to the cpu cooler. I hope this will reduce the temperature by 2 to 5 degrees celsius. The heatpipe is still travelng right know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dr3mro · 2023-06-26 06:18 try to disable hardware with no drivers , that wiki page [https://wiki .freebsd.org/TuningPowerConsumption](https://wiki.freebsd.org/TuningPo werConsumption) helped me on x250, good luck ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lenzo1337 · 2023-06-26 15:59 Yup, powerd++ is a replacement for powerd with more features. as for finding modules using "man -k intel" or whatever you are looking for will often be useful; the man pages are really good. You can also check what's available from pkgs or ports. For instance the command "pkg search kmod" might be something you would try if you were looking for gpu stuff. probably i915kms and iwm for the wlan card would be the actual modules you need. Ah, also webcamd if you want to use the build in webcam on it. So until you set everything up you are going to be making a lot of edits to the /etc/rc.conf file.
