Is it possible to have a CLI-only version of FreeBSD? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivid-Jury-2105 · 2023-06-23 19:03 I have a crappy laptop that I’ve been wanting to use as a server. I would almost always just SSH into the laptop. What are your recommendations? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RavagerRaccoon · 2023-06-23 19:08 FreeBSD installs CLI only by default, though the things you stuff in jails might have webpages to help manage them. (Or very possibly it does install a GUI somewhere but I never used it lol.) You'll have to manually configure things like remote access, by default most things are shut off. But there's plenty of howtos for that and for installing xAMP stack or whatever in jails. Good way to get to know the basics. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Danger_Alma · 2023-06-23 19:39 Try FreeBSD + Webmin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCN_cyberstrator · 2023-06-23 19:51 I just posted a proposal for a FreeBSD BBS here. which would be all about using the command line. Do it. 🤘 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EstablishmentBig7956 · 2023-06-23 20:22 That's exactly how it installs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LeslieH8 · 2023-06-23 22:03 I had to install a WM when I decided that I wanted one. It is not only possible, it is already included at no extra charge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivid-Jury-2105 · 2023-06-23 22:12 I’m really showing my ignorance with this post haha. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wolandark · 2023-06-23 23:09 Impossible. FreeBSD is a super bloated OS. You should use ServerBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dr3mro · 2023-06-24 00:20 you can install freebsd + nginx in a few minutes and use NFS for file server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivid-Jury-2105 · 2023-06-24 03:55 Haha, my ignorance in FreeBSD is palpable in this post. But thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RavagerRaccoon · 2023-06-24 07:01 hey, we all start at zero :) you're gathering info, that's all good! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OwnPomegranate5906 · 2023-06-24 08:19 Cli is the default. You have to install and configure the gui after the initial install. If you don’t want a gui, just don’t do that. Otherwise, after it installs, set up your user account, then turn on ssh so you can just ssh to it, then, from there, after ssh-ing to it, setup whatever other services you want through su. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njunkie · 2023-06-24 10:06 Well FreeBSD is cli-only out of the box. If you need to make cli-only already installed system, just do pkg delete -fa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- infostud · 2023-06-24 11:29 What services do you want to serve? Just web? I ran FreeBSD on a laptop with 8MB (not GB) RAM and 128MB (not GB) HD and played Nethack in the mid-1990s. I think I could have run Apache as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2023-06-24 14:53 Nice question! So many patient answers :-)) I haven't installed FreeBSD for a few years, but I remember that was cli only, thus I failed to get fully working Xorg from the installation media and had to go for ports and packages. Though did fail to setup mouse in a virtual machine. As far as I remember XFree86/Xorg were supplied with installation media back in 2000s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2023-06-24 15:44 oof. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatguyrenic · 2023-06-24 16:48 There was a bbs software in the ports tree called mystic or something like that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCNCyberstrator · 2023-06-24 16:58 Yes but that is MysticBBS. What this project will be is a pure FreeBSD build BBS within FreeBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatguyrenic · 2023-06-24 17:00 Oh.. Thought they wanted to run one, not build one... My bad. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Carltonfsck · 2023-06-24 17:04 I’ve been operating a public facing virtual machine running FreeBSD as server for several years. I have all the major services running on it (HTTP/S, SSH , Proxy, SFTP, IMAPS/SMTPS, OpenVPN, etc). All via the CLI, with no GUI desktop. I love it. … I have a separate, dedicated home VM running FreeBSD as a desktop. I like to have the best of both worlds. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UCNCyberstrator · 2023-06-24 17:18 but wouldn't that be kind of neat to have a pure FreeBSD style BBS board. built right into the system like a pkg. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thatguyrenic · 2023-06-24 17:23 Doesn't interest me. I actually tried to get back into BBSing a couple decades ago... There weren't enough active users to make it interesting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mefirstreddit · 2023-06-25 00:39 You forgot the /s it seems... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-25 00:58 > If you need to make cli-only already installed system, just do pkg delete -fa People, please do not run that command. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senior_Estimate6897 · 2023-06-25 01:36 Looks like I'll have to stick with my trusty command line skills. GUI, who needs it? #OldSchool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wolandark · 2023-06-25 01:54 Should've been obvious ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Inray · 2023-06-25 02:46 I honestly don't understand why so many conflicting answers to such a simple question. FreeBSD IS a pure cli-only server OS, and by default it installs as such. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zenmondo · 2023-06-25 04:09 Way back in 1999 my web host business used a FreeBSD server and it never had a gui. It had a massive uptime too until someone hit the reset button thinking it was the NT server for the domains that needed ASP. Don't be afraid to just dive in and learn while you go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- njunkie · 2023-06-25 06:19 Oh, sorry, my bad. I’ve thought firstly author wants to have clean system for virtualisation or routing purpose. Ok, if you want to have cli-only system just do pkg delete xorg (or some of basic xorg packages, e.g xcb) and pkg autoremove then. But it’s quite possible that some packages are built with xorg, or graphics dependencies like gd or ImageMagick. In this case packages with “nox” flavours should be installed instead ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-25 06:40 > FreeBSD IS a pure cli-only server OS, For clarity: not only for servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FrogPeopleFrog · 2023-06-25 11:18 what op means is running stuff in framebuffer not really supported much on freebsd, linux is better at it pre kms anyways ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mefirstreddit · 2023-06-25 17:48 Well there are ppl asking if you can install FreeBSD without a GUI so you never know... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Wolandark · 2023-06-25 22:17 not my fault some people are too stupid ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-06-26 15:03 [removed]
