Debootstrap - what is the most recent distro that works reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty-Librarian-777 · 2023-06-16 20:07 ? (sorry forgot ? in title) I had Focal setup, as per guide on forums, but is that the latest version that does work? Or do other versions just require more linux experience to setup? I have 14-current installed atm, new gpu in pc only works there. Mostly using windows till release and I just want to install the same version of ubuntu WSL; so I don't have to get familiar with 2 different versions. TIA p.s I use freebsd mostly and less familiar with linux, just want to get familiar with a ditro so I can figure out how to run software in linux jails and fix issues when it's not just from a guide and copy/paste. and want just one flavour, other than focal if possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolTheCold · 2023-06-17 03:18 WSL actually can run multiple distros and their versions at once - in a day I had Ubuntu Focal, Ubuntu Jammy, Alpine, Debian 10 - all on the same machine. I prefer Jammy over Focal, but no idea what will work in FreeBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glued2thefloor · 2023-06-17 04:18 Its not clear to me what your goal is. If you have FreeBSD as the host, why not run Debian/Ubuntu in a FreeBSD jail? It would be more secure than WSL on Windows. Some might argue its able to be configured more secure there than as a Linux host, but that's a long discussion. I hate to be a stickler, but you came to a FreeBSD subreddit. Setting up Ubuntu on a Windows subsystem is a more than a little off topic. However, learning about FreeBSD jails is not ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty-Librarian-777 · 2023-06-17 05:13 I mean once 14.0 is released, I will. But for now I am mostly using windows, for normal use (games, surf, etc) but have some dev work to do and learning rust and can't stand it for that. I don't want to reboot the machine just for that, and wsl is handy, and close enough for me. I am not experienced with current branch, so besides having to update every week or so, I am not sure that is too secure too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty-Librarian-777 · 2023-06-17 07:31 Yes I did try jammy once (on fbsd), but following the same guide did not work, kept running into problems later. So reverted to focal. Right now I have 14-current installed, (first time on current) and only because it is the only version that supports my gpu( with drm-515). Until release, it is just there to have some working version, and not sure that is too secure. Isn't that up to the security team once the code is frozen or something? I am just asking in prep for fbsd, but for sake of consistency, I would prefer the same version in wsl for now, just to get familiar. I mean I could just stick to focal, but if anyone knows how to setup later releases on freebsd, why not go with that? Come to think of it, I would probably go with debian if I knew that it works, how to fix issues and generally maintain it. WSL is just for now, for fun and like training ground, because there are things I need to try and run eventually in linux jails that require a bit more know how it seems then just fingers crossed. With focal, I usually have it installed for DRM/netflix just fine, but once I need to install something else, I usually get stuck if it is not a simple app that just works. I am not an expert with fbsd, but I am much less with linux. So I don't mind learning 1 deb/ubu version across the board for that purpose, but that is about it. I think in more recent releases of linux in general, they have made changes to folder structure, with libs64 and other libs I think, moved somewhere else for instance; more than I want to keep up with. And all in all sticking with focal seems like I'll have an install that I am scared to mess with and break, instead of having something I kinda understand and can tinker with. +5mins Linux = -5mins fbsd.matters when have a long ways to go. Probably rather dual boot windows for anything not available in freebsd. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty-Librarian-777 · 2023-06-17 07:52 Yes I found that out few days ago and even saw something called pistacchio that uses any pkg manager from various distros; but I am not really interested in linux per se, I just need it for freebsd to run some apps, and am just asking to have a consistent distro that I know how to use besides basics. wsl is just for now, untill 14.0 is released, and I just want to get familiar with 1 distro that will also work on fbsd, with exact same version. Hoping I can move past focal because that makes it seem like the stars have to be aligned, instead of knowing your way around. debian would be my first choice if I knew how to run it in fbsd jail, because I also like to have a bhyve vm for sake of it and I don't like ubuntu for that. I tried jammy once with debootstrap and followed the focal guide, with I hiccup I figured out, but later run into constant issues, especially with the pkg manager when installing software. So seemed to me you could get around those things if you know the system, because it looked like minor things, if you know the system. I can't even get my head around the adding repos and signatures stuff, let alone localing libs, wrappers etc. But it is just one of those things, can't be bothered with the linux system itself for my use case, but would make an effort. I just want a head start using wsl till 14.0 is out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolTheCold · 2023-06-17 08:51 I don't advocate for any particular choice, just noting that referring to WSL is too general, not an exact reference. Good luck with your experiments and have fun! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Difficult_Cow_1961 · 2023-06-18 22:41 Hello: cd /usr/local/share/debootstrap/scripts That will show you all available distros. Hope this helps! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- raidersalami · 2023-06-19 19:06 Is it possible to run windows in a freebsd jail? I've never tried setting up jails in general and I'm new to the freebsd world so not sure where to start as far as setting this up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glued2thefloor · 2023-06-19 22:40 Jails kind of work a little like docker in Linux, but better. So basically no matter what OS, you still use the kernel of the host. Many Linux distros work fine with FreeBSD kernels or kernels from other unix and unix-like variants. That is not the case with Windows. You can run it with virtualbox inside FreeBSD or some other virtualization, but that's going to be a no for a jail. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- raidersalami · 2023-06-19 23:11 Thanks for the advice. Do you have any suggestion as to which virtualization tools are better, such as virtualbox, bhyve or qemu on a freebsd platform? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glued2thefloor · 2023-06-19 23:17 Qemu is better, but virtualbox is probably a little more user friendly. If you are new to these tools I'd recommend virtualbox.
