There's like, two of us that even run it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-06-16 19:44 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nooceht · 2023-06-16 20:17 FreeBSD was my first love. I wish i had the skill to write a layer that seamlessly integrates drivers from other OS’. Thats the only thing that freebsd seems to be missing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-06-16 20:23 it's remarkable that they continue Unix' legacy, and in some parts of the system, really old code/documentation still can be found. some time ago, i played with some Ancient Unices ^^TM online (from 70's or beginning of 80's) running on an emulator. after some poking around, felt right at home :D with some small exceptions, everything was where it's supposed to be! talk about tradition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joemc04 · 2023-06-17 03:16 I got a FreeBSD book that came with an installation cd in the 90s. I was a little kid who tried to make another partition on the family computer and accidentally broke windows 3.1 or 95. Can’t remember. Was up all night fixing it before anyone found out. Haven’t used FreeBSD in any real capacity since, other than it just runs a server in my basement. But it’s great at that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cc672012 · 2023-06-17 03:48 Lol this was me in 2013 when I was a kid learning Linux and accidentally wiped the Windows partition. Haven't discovered FreeBSD yet but glad I wasn't the only one. 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DimestoreProstitute · 2023-06-17 04:28 Here's a funky shred of history in the lovely shell: https://www.in- ulm.de/~mascheck/various/ash/functionpathsearch.html Edit: fixed url ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ColtC7 · 2023-06-17 11:32 If only that was how it worked... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ComprehensiveSell435 · 2023-06-17 12:05 🎉 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-17 16:57 Cheers! Hint: 200% ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nooceht · 2023-06-17 17:54 Lmao that’s why i wrote it’s missing, because it’s not working that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blakeontheriver · 2023-06-17 18:57 Cheers to another 30! 🥂🍻 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyleW_ne · 2023-06-18 06:28 Happy 30th Birthday to my first BSD and first UNIX truly a rock solid system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WizardS82 · 2023-06-19 00:29 Happy 30th birthday! FreeBSD 4.9 was my first encounter, so I guess another personal anniversary celebration is in order later this year! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2023-06-19 04:52 :-) I was using FreeBSD somewhere from 2001 to 2005. From the logical point of view it was and it still is a good OS. Unfortunately heavy investing in Linux did its job of wiping concurrents from commercial niches. :-( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-19 20:40 > … [Used by billions of people around the globe, FreeBSD is used to teach operating system concepts in universities.](https://freebsdfoundation.org/national-freebsd-day/) … – became, three years ago: > … [Billions of people around the globe use FreeBSD to teach operating system concepts in universities.](https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-freebsd-day- june-19/) … A low estimate: two billion university-based teachers use FreeBSD, which recently had [0.01 percent of the desktop marketing operating system share worldwide](https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/12kh d60/weve_made_it_to_001_guys/). So, defocusing from FreeBSD: * [2,000,000,000 ÷ 0.01%](https://www.wolframalpha.com/input?i=2+billi on+divided+by+0.01+percent) = at least twenty trillion teachers in universities alone. Now: multiply this number by the average weight of a tweed jacket in the Northern Hemisphere, then estimate the minimal effect on axial precession of the Earth during the period 2023–2048.
