GTK slow launch reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-14 17:17 Hello, i experienced slow GTK app launch (25-30s), it only happens to GTK apps. Digging into the problem, it seems that libgnome-keyring (rm'd to no avail), also [xdg-desktop-portal- gtk](https://www.spinics.net/linux/fedora/fedora- users/msg493221.html), [another](https://github.com/swaywm/sway/issues/5732). But i dont have it installed. The affected programs mainly are: librewolf, zim, interestingly GTK 2 apps dont have this problem (claws-mail), it is a GTK3+ problem. Also running said programs under dbus-monitor, it screamed about Nameaquired, NameLock, NameLost alot. I asked here because there is no freebsd specific (or \*BSD) instructions to troubleshoot said issue. TIA. EDIT: Also the problem is with first start, starts after that are fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ggeldenhuys · 2023-06-14 20:22 Sounds like it's triggering a required background service, before the gtk3 apps can work properly. Then on second start, the supporting service is already running (and maybe cache), and then starts faster. I've seen this before. Does the post install messages (in ports) maybe mention something about required background services? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-14 20:56 hmm, nothing interesting with `pkg info -D $pkg`. here's the "dbus-monitor" output: ''' signal time=1686775809.264389 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.5 serial=2 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired string ":1.5" signal time=1686775809.264413 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.5 serial=4 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameLost string ":1.5" method call time=1686775826.484306 sender=:1.6 -> destination=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=1 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=Hello method return time=1686775826.484315 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.6 serial=1 reply_serial=1 string ":1.6" signal time=1686775826.484322 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=5 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string ":1.6" string "" string ":1.6" signal time=1686775826.484327 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.6 serial=2 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired string ":1.6" method call time=1686775826.498725 sender=:1.6 -> destination=org.mozilla.librewolf.ZGVmYXVsdC1yZWxlYXNl serial=2 path=/org/mozilla/librewolf/Remote; interface=org.mozilla.librewolf; member=OpenURL array of bytes [ 01 00 00 00 18 00 00 00 2f 75 73 72 2f 68 6f 6d 65 2f 6c 61 72 72 79 00 6c 69 62 72 65 77 6f 6c 66 00 ] error time=1686775826.498751 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.6 error_name=org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown reply_serial=2 string "The name org.mozilla.librewolf.ZGVmYXVsdC1yZWxlYXNl was not provided by any .service files" method call time=1686775832.698457 sender=:1.6 -> destination=org.freedesktop.DBus serial=3 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=RequestName string "org.mozilla.librewolf.ZGVmYXVsdC1yZWxlYXNl" uint32 4 signal time=1686775832.698470 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=(null destination) serial=6 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameOwnerChanged string "org.mozilla.librewolf.ZGVmYXVsdC1yZWxlYXNl" string "" string ":1.6" signal time=1686775832.698475 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.6 serial=4 path=/org/freedesktop/DBus; interface=org.freedesktop.DBus; member=NameAcquired string "org.mozilla.librewolf.ZGVmYXVsdC1yZWxlYXNl" method return time=1686775832.698477 sender=org.freedesktop.DBus -> destination=:1.6 serial=5 reply_serial=3 uint32 1 ''' ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-15 01:46 Cross-reference: [Firefox/Librewolf Startup Problem](https://old.reddi t.com/r/freebsd/comments/1468tp4/firefoxlibrewolf_startup_problem/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-15 03:17 Sorry I should've referenced posts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-15 06:02 No need to apologise :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-15 20:14 nvm, installed gentoo and everything works great. I really wanted freebsd to be the desktop, but due to linuxisms it cannot, GTK is a hacky toolkit (cant beat em, join em) Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty-Librarian-777 · 2023-06-16 19:50 Did you have /proc mounted? edit: not sure it that is the issue , but would start there ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-16 22:49 i have an old laptop that ive tried it on, with the exact same configs. Mounted it, but it didn't fix the issue ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AccurateVictory · 2023-06-18 13:38 Yes, it must be something with dbus missing or another service (gvfs? polkit?) or whatever. It is not specific to FreeBSD, on a minimal linux installation without the GNOME machinery, it does happen too. Quite annoying when it impacts GTK based app even when those are not part of GNOME project. :/ EDIT: try to log to your WM/desktop through GDM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AccurateVictory · 2023-06-18 13:41 Yep, I had that GTK behavior on Arch too. I remember now, it happened when I started my environment (no necessary gnome) outside of GDM, using startx instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-18 19:01 I wanted to see how many packages gdm would pull > 28 packages of which is gnome-desktop, 100mib space No thanks, sticking with XDM for now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold_Survey1998 · 2023-06-18 19:02 Yeah, it whines about libgio, gio, gvfs (i dont have it installed) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AccurateVictory · 2023-06-18 21:33 I agree even though on Linux it didn't pull gnome-desktop and stuff. But I do remember that using GDM solved that at the time, it was reproducible. Today, I only use xinitrc but I don't have this *bug*. the only gnome/freedesktop thingy that I have in this file is: ```dbus-update-activation-environment --systemd DISPLAY & ``` I can't tell what's the equivalent for freebsd unfortunately.
