3D acceleration in VMs? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suitedbadge401 · 2023-06-13 20:52 Hi all, it’s difficult to find information on this, but does FreeBSD support 3D acceleration within virtual machines if the vmware driver is in use? I’ve found this: https://man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=vmware&apropos=0 But this talks about the module being used in Linux. Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deaddodo · 2023-06-14 02:38 Yes, 3D acceleration is offered in the FreeBSD VMware driver. It depends on the host how that works (VMware and virtualbox manage it differently, afaik), however. Any functions not accelerated by the host architecture are polyfilled by software emulation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Suitedbadge401 · 2023-06-14 07:37 Ah I see, thank you. I’m planning to use VMware so I’m guessing that by the name, it should work as expected. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ggeldenhuys · 2023-06-14 15:08 Oh wow, I didn't know 3d is supporting. Good to know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-15 01:39 ### VirtualBox on FreeBSD > (VMware and virtualbox manage it differently, afaik), From : > > Where Guest Additions are installed: > > 1. prefer VBoxSVGA > 2. do not enable 3D acceleration (doing so will invisibly lose the preference for VBoxSVGA)
