Non-root user cannot write in home directory reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-05-29 15:10 I have created non-root user to run gitea but gitea scripts cannot modify prescribed home directory with "Permission denied" error. I should allow writing in this directory but I don't understand how. How can I change permissions? Thank you all! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2023-05-29 15:33 What permissions/ownership are returned from $ ls -lsFd ~gitea (assuming your non-root user is named "gitea") ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gumnos · 2023-05-29 15:34 additionally, are the `gitea` scripts running as the the `gitea` user? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- timvandijknl · 2023-05-29 15:44 chmod 0755 ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EstablishmentBig7956 · 2023-05-29 16:12 Change ownership to the users name #chown user:group path Make sure the group assignment are correct 775 if all else fails ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheRedPepper · 2023-05-29 17:23 I don’t know it’s a great idea. But I run gitea with its own home directory. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-05-29 17:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Street_Struggle3937 · 2023-05-29 18:19 I see gitea in the answers. Do you use ZFS. I once had a problem with gitea not been able to, what looked like it cloulf not write. But it turned out a ZFS dataset had been set to no executable. That way gitea could not run the scripts that placed the files. I do not remember the exact dataset. I thought it was in /var/db. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirandavanbreukeling · 2023-05-29 21:49 chown -Rfv user:user/usr/home/user if still empty? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-05-31 07:57 Yes, they are run by gitea user ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-06-03 00:52 > chown -Rfv user:user/usr/home/user Missing space. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mirandavanbreukeling · 2023-06-03 06:28 Forgot a space It‘s: chown -Rvf user:user /home/user/* Or use the userdel and than useradd function, it sets your /home directory to 755.
