i put (it's hard to call it install ;) 13-2 Release on my old RPI 3B+, and it's a breeze! reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-04-30 08:51 followed some generic YT tutorial, and as the title says it was a breeze! installed all the software i needed (ffmpeg, yt-dlp, mkvtoolnix, etc...). the GUI itself feels snappy, works much better (faster) than Fedora 33 that was there before. i guess all the bloat that comes with Linux was a little too much for the little Pi to pull. all in all - very fast, very easy, no problems at all. much better alternative than Linux. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jak_from_Venice · 2023-04-30 09:21 Confirmed: I’m thinking of running NextCloud in a jail on my RPi 3b+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- satsugene · 2023-04-30 10:26 Any issues or special setup/modifications with boot (dtbs)? Any hardware noticeably not working? I’m very interested in trying it myself, especially on a 4B/8GB model. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InformationWorking71 · 2023-04-30 10:44 Have you got a link to that wallpaper, I like it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thefriedel · 2023-04-30 11:33 It's one of the default XFCE wallpapers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kombac · 2023-04-30 12:30 I'm no longer running freebsd on my pi4 (due to docker reasons) but man you're gonna be in for a ride. At first it's similar to how you'd set it up on Linux, but wait till you get to the networking part. You can set up virtual hosts (i.e. different IPs for each of your jails in your `jail.conf`) + an unbound jail for dns and add a dns blacklist to replicate the behavior of a pihole minus the bloat. Don't forget you have the pf firewall. Cherry on top? Every time you break your nextcloud or apache/nginx config you can roll back to a previous working zfs snapshot in less than a second. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jak_from_Venice · 2023-04-30 12:43 Jeez! I love you BSD guys! I started recently because FreeBSD looked safer than Debian-RPi, but after reading the “Absolute FreeBSD” I was flabbergasted! But isn’t ZFS too heavy to run on a usb pendrive? I’d like to keep the internal flash card with UFS. Am I wrong using this configuration? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kombac · 2023-04-30 14:23 I personally used it on an external sata ssd drive hooked into the usb 3.0 port, but I don't think hard drives or usb pendrives would be that big of an issue, and obv don't do it on a micro sd card lol. That being said, I remember reading somewhere (either alpine wiki or freebsd handbook) that zfs has a minimum ram requirement. My pi4 had 8G ram and 3b+ with less ram might not do so well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-04-30 14:33 > … I remember reading somewhere (either alpine wiki or freebsd handbook) that zfs has a minimum ram requirement. … ▶ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-04-30 19:05 Suggested minimum RAM is 2G. FBSD 13.2 on my 3B+ runs ~130-140Mb in memory of the 1Gb available. ZFS will run and can be configured to use less arc, so it depends on the application. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-04-30 19:16 I've been running FreeBSD on one of my 3B+ since 13.0 was released. Have upgraded up through 13.2. Have mostly used it as a sort of homelab experimenting with different applications. I buy microSD cards in bulk for the purpose of being able to have clones for experimentation and learning. I like tinkering in resource restricted environments because it forces a user to prioritize what is important. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-04-30 20:43 no and no. but i don't have any extra hardware to go with my Pi (no HATs, no camera, etc.) just USB peripherals. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-04-30 20:56 catch -> https://imgur.com/6IXshrv ! *converted from .svg to .png with ImageMagick* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JuanSmittjr · 2023-05-01 08:47 which YT tutorials? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-05-01 11:06 ribalinux? he's got plenty of videos on Unix-like OSes, including BSD's (all three iirc). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SkiBumb1977 · 2023-05-01 14:29 I'm looking at putting BSD on a Pi. I have some hardware that might not work but I'll give it a whirly. XFCE looks nice and it's light. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- paprok · 2023-05-01 17:40 > XFCE looks nice and it's light. yup. tried another DEs that Handbook lists (light ones) and they're not very good. either too sparse (some things missing) or not working very well. found NsCDE in binary packages tho, and it works without a hitch! https://github.com/NsCDE/NsCDE so i got modern OS with retro look'n'feel -> https://ibb.co/NxXkB24 btw. i *love* playing with different operating systems, desktop environments, etc. last time i molested my Pi (maybe some 2 years ago) these were not very well polished - it just started then. right now, the overall experience is not that much different from ordinary PC. which is a good thing. all in all OS ecosystem in general made a big step forward in regard to Pi hardware. right now playing with OpenBSD - Net is next in line :D
