FreeBSD on Asus PN50 reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 01:52 Does anyone have it running? I was just given one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GreenMan802 · 2023-04-04 02:46 Try it out and let us know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gant696 · 2023-04-04 06:01 Let us know how it goes buddy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok_Appointment_3249 · 2023-04-04 08:25 Try ghostbsd live image and check bsd compatibility ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 08:57 Thanks, but I am more confident in FreeBSD; Ghost gave me problems on a Thinkpad W530, whereas FreeBSD (13.1) went right on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 10:25 >comments It installed 13.1 with no problems. Uses amdgpu for display. There were a lot of BIOS corporate-security-type settings to disable, this thing was definitely engineered for a Windows 10-SCCM environment. Having a weird http problem (e.g., I can ping [yahoo.com](https://yahoo.com), but get a "The connection was reset" whenever I try to connect to the site.) Since my TP never had this problem, I may go spelunking in the BIOS again. For those who care, it uses a Ryzen 5 4500U. The one I was gifted has 32GB RAM and a 500GB NVME drive, I think M.2. User guide says it will additionally hold a 2.5-in. SATA SSD, but I saw some casual comments on heat causing the case fan to go on a lot. Have to install a bunch more software, but at first blush this seems like a nice machine - two thumbs up :-). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 10:27 Oh, I haven't tried configuring the wifi adapter yet, but it was identified as an iwl device, so I don't anticipate problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _gyu_ · 2023-04-04 11:56 For a long time there was no accelerated display driver. Or display driver et al. Only vesa console. But I use it as a desktop now since a while. After an update display started to work, so I started to use it as my main desktop. That was... Around October/ November I think. Cool stuff. And crazy fast! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _gyu_ · 2023-04-04 12:01 I couldn't make the wifi work. I already had a Linux bhyve vm running. I just passed through the PCI device to that Linux vm, and that serves as the AP / bridge between wireless and the actual vlan where my openwrt based wifi AP works on 5G. Also, it's good to know: these Intel ax200 chipset cards won't work as an AP in the 5G range, so don't even try that. As an AP they only work in the olde 2.4GHz channels. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 12:14 ifconfig is seeing it. I've set up wpa\_supplicant.conf for the home router. Will unplug later and see if lagg switches over. wlan0: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu 1500 (etc) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 12:31 Interesting that you say that. One of the reasons I am switching over is that the TCP stack is supposed to be faster than Linux. However, when I tested against the Ookla [speedtest.net](https://speedtest.net) network, my old 2012 (i7) Mac Mini (6,2; Monterey) gave better speeds. FreeBSD isn't doing any better than my Ubuntu 22.04 (i7) desktop. I tuned the Linux TCP stack; I will put TCP tuning on the list here for post-install. Friggin' Apple - great hardware until Jobs passed, now they're just another consumer electronics company. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 12:32 Fixed the network issue, all is good now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oradba · 2023-04-04 12:32 It goes well, so far :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _gyu_ · 2023-04-04 12:51 Now that you mention networking... That realtek chip providing network connectivity is terrible. I have a few bhyve VMs running, and also some of the network traffic are separated into different vlans. Sometimes network just freeze. Everything else is working, but every network communication stops. You can't just restart networking, you have to reboot the whole PC. That part I really hate 😥 Doesn't happen too often. Only once in let's say, every three months, on an average. But still agravating. The only thing I couldn't connect it: one of the bhyve VMs provide network gateway to a vlan via routing everything through a VPN. When traffic in that VPN is constantly around 80-100mbps (which is only 8-10% of the full capacity of the 1Gbps nic!), than the issue repeats with a higher probability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-04-04 16:18 > Ghost gave me problems on a Thinkpad W530, How long ago?
