Hi I just installed FreeBSD and no Internet + insufficient/or denied permission, plus first time installing reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-18 18:45 Internet: I connect my pc to my wife using a usb c as Ethernet at the installation it showed the port for the Wi-Fi which I think it worked but I tried to reinstall it due to the permissions issues and the caused it not to work somehow Permissions: Tried at first downloading sudo but said insufficient permissions tried reinstalling the port no longer shows up Note: I’m going to sleep and the next day I’m going to school so sorry if you need any other info about the problem thanks Edit: got sudo working but says user not in sudoers I will check for a solution and if you know it it would be awesome ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2023-03-18 19:14 You need to configure sudo to allow for groups of user to switch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RobIsAThing · 2023-03-18 19:34 Are you logged in as root or the user you created? By default, users aren't added to the wheel group which allows you to elevate privileges with su or sudo, so you'll probably need to log in locally as root, add your user to wheel group to allow them to elevate privileges, and I guess while you are there you could get sudo installed and configure anything else that requires permissions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2023-03-18 21:21 I literally can't process this statement: "I connect my pc to my wife using a usb c as Ethernet at the installation it showed the port for the Wi-Fi which I think it worked" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itaewonclass2020 · 2023-03-18 21:41 > I connect my PC to my wife What’s amazing is your wife is a robot. Did you try rebooting her maybe that’ll fix the problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanArcad · 2023-03-18 21:45 I would redo the install and then make sure you add yourself to the wheel group (which is easy to forget to do since the prompting is minimal, its the "add user to more groups?" line), and then make sure that the networking / wifi connects before you move on. "su" works out of the box, "sudo" you will need to install and config, if you want to use it (you don't have to). My understanding is that the Core FreeBSD team identified wifi and installation headaches as their two biggest priorities and I would agree with them. If you have to already know FreeBSD before you can install FreeBSD, especially with a graphical setup, then that's not a good situation. Fortunately there are a lot of good resources available. /u/vermaden has a great [FreeBSD page](https://vermaden.wordpress.com/) for example. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2023-03-19 00:42 Thanks mate. Feel free to reach out to me when you have FreeBSD problems. I will try to help with what I know. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INJECT_JACK_DANIELS · 2023-03-19 02:02 You should make a guide on how to get the corona virus vaccine :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:21 Yes I’m logged in as root or the account that I created + sudo doesn’t work Edit: it just says sudo doesn’t exist or something like that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:23 Typo Wi-Fi not wife lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:24 Thanks I would check it out ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:29 Yep I did it didn’t work I contacted the manufacturer and I said I want to repair my wife myself but they said go to one of our store or you will never get her fixed :( Jokes aside it’s just a typo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:32 I would when I’m done with FreeBSD ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 03:35 Here’s a simplified version hope it works Internet comes for pc from Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi connected to pc using USB c in install(the first) the port for usb c shows up the other installs usb c port no show up ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 05:47 Got it reinstalled and got internet too using another Wi-Fi with Ethernet but still says insufficient privileges Edit: I did put my user in wheel and still says sudo not found ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanArcad · 2023-03-19 05:57 If "su' says insufficient privileges, then you still haven't added yourself to the wheel group most likely. If you don't want to reinstall, you can follow the guide [here](https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/basics/#users- synopsis) to learn how to use the "pw usermod" and "pw groupmod" commands to add users to groups. If "su" works but "sudo" doesn't, then try typing "visudo" to edit your config file. There is a line you have to uncomment in order to give everyone in the wheel group permissions to sudo, if you scroll through you will see it. I think that's the only change you need to make. However I actually just use "su" myself, so someone else might have better info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 06:02 Here I switched to root downloaded sudo which worked but sudo says user not in sudoers which in root doesn’t do but it’s fine I’m willing to switch to root when downloading or doing commands ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanArcad · 2023-03-19 06:03 Try typing this - you don't need to be root to do it: pw group show wheel On my system, I get: wheel:*:0:root,arcadian Showing that root and arcadian (my user account) is in the wheel group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 06:04 This is what I got: wheel:*:0:root Edit: I probably messed up when adding the user ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IanArcad · 2023-03-19 06:15 You will probably want to get familiar with the FreeBSD Handbook that I linked to - it has a lot of essential info. Right now you will want to do two things: 1. Add yourself to the wheel group as mentioned 2. Install the sudo package and then configure it with visudo These commands may do it: pw groupmod wheel -m pkg install -y sudo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mohammad22341 · 2023-03-19 06:22 I got the my user in wheel I checked with the command it showed up and I’m in visudo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamzwakk · 2023-03-19 12:34 why use sudo instead of doas? it's much simpler if all you want is commands to be run as root ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2023-03-20 21:54 > visudo That's brave ;-)
