Downloading FreeBSD 4.4 took 4:44m! reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- roXplosion · 2022-08-22 03:46 4.4? Was that 44 years ago? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RelevantProposal · 2022-08-22 04:55 If FreeBSD 4.4 had come out 44 years ago, I'm pretty sure the world would have ended up a bit different: the 8086 had just been released. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tambow44 · 2022-08-22 06:32 Arguably the most important computer chip ever created. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tambow44 · 2022-08-22 06:35 Not quite! I can tell you that 4.4BSD kernel used 162k lines of code ; compared to 11BSD's 1.51m! (this is the "machine independent" code) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExoticAssociation817 · 2022-08-22 07:02 What’s a Boolean ---------------------------------------------------------------------- implicitpharmakoi · 2022-08-22 08:53 TYPE RAGE!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jak_from_Venice · 2022-08-22 12:07 Stuff for people that doesn’t know how to deal with logical operators and integers 😂 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VastAd1765 · 2022-08-22 12:21 And also the worst. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-08-22 13:00 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-24 14:37 Errrr. one of the reasons I abandoned FreeBSD nowadays was low speed updates about 500kB/s from my location. Anyway 4.4 was fast and nice, used it on an office internet gateway. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-24 14:43 @@4.4? Was that 44 years ago?@@ Nope, it was more than 14 years ago and it's not that fun to see how the classical unix project slips into a niche product. 4.4 was way better for maintenance than Linuces of that times. Ports collection was precious thing before apt-get was widely introduced with Ubuntu... I know I know.. but one of my colleagues had Debian diali-in host hacked in 2003 🤐 so at those years I didn't consider the distro to be safe... 😮 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tambow44 · 2022-08-25 09:57 Were your observed speeds different across OS's? I but plainly have terrible internet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-25 10:20 I only played with virtual machines in VMW/H-V. Alongside other VMs downloading ports and updates were noticeable slower. But my internet isn't that slow but varying on destinations :-( and might be from 13-200Mbit per thread depending on the destination. (Sometimes downloading ubuntu.iso may show 30-60MByte/s from their main site.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-25 10:28 There was notorious Motorola 68k Unix processor. 😀 Nobody considered 8086 to be that universal. But have a look at Unix desktop presentation in Computer chronicles video from 80s - all the presented workstations were hell dead slow :-((( ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-25 10:33 Uh.. it's very rough statement. Firstly 80s GUI was absolutely conquered by Apple, which used m68k. And by the time of late 486-Pentiums era Apple was almost outperformed by the price of Wintel. So what was going on during 1980s? Why Moto didn't evolve their CPU? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VastAd1765 · 2022-08-25 11:03 Because IBM selected the x86 for the personal computer and we paid the price for that ever since then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rtplor · 2022-08-27 04:08 I guess I need to ask Wikipedia if Moto and IBM joined efforts to provide Apple with PowerPC :-)))) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ExoticAssociation817 · 2022-08-31 04:42 You know it
