Brand new user, fresh install, I can only login as root reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- laefeator · 2022-08-19 22:05 Hi there, Brand new user, wanted to try out FreeBSD for a long time and finally had some time to do it I made a fresh new install in a VM and managed to install a desktop environment too (MATE). Here is what I did so far freebsd-update fetch freebsd-update install pkg install -y xorg pkg install slim pkg install mate Then nano /etc/rc.conf moused_enable="YES" dbus_enable="YES" hald_enable="YES" slim_enable="YES" Then nano .xinitrc exec mate-session reboot MATE is up and running everything cool but I can only login as a root. I tried to add a user with "adduser" and if I do a "cat /etc/passwd" then the new user is there in the bottom of the list. Yet when I logout and try to login slim always fail with a "Failed to execute login command" message. Probably I skipped something in the install process or idk, have no idea really. At least the system works with the root login. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- scipio_africanus123 · 2022-08-19 22:16 try creating a new user, call it foo or something. if that works, it's a package issue; if it doesn't, your parameters to adduser are probably wrong. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deaddodo · 2022-08-19 22:18 Did you make sure to add your user to the proper groups? By default, I believe they only have access to terminal (well, tty devices, to be specific). You would need to [run something like](https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/x11/): # pw groupmod video -m USER || pw groupmod wheel -m USER For a desktop machine, I would usually just add the user to all basic groups (video, audio, etc) and the installer usually lets you choose between these when you add a user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-08-19 22:28 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Alexander88207 · 2022-08-20 00:08 Please remove hald, its deprecated and have been removed long tine ago. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- asveikau · 2022-08-20 02:54 `~/.xinitrc` is a per user thing. Did you put it in the right place? It sounds a bit like root has one but the new user doesn't. There's also a global script in `/etc/X11/xinitrc`. Personally I find `~/.xsession` and running a display manager to be more pleasant, rather than `startx`. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mfjurbala · 2022-08-20 21:41 How is everything going? Have you made any progress? I seem to remember having a similar issue with slim in the past but I don't remember the solution right now. If you're still having trouble I'll make a new install and see if I can figure it out again. As an easy work around, you could try lightdm which always worked for me or if you want Mate already set up you can try GhostBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wb7odyfred · 2022-08-22 05:53 vi .xinitrc exec mate-session :wq startx to start the MATE desktop. Ghost use the MATE desktop. Boot that in your virtual machine or just boot directly to metal. It is a live version that needs minimum of 4GB ram. You can remove the USB flash drive after booting, since the image is copied into RAM memory and is running from ram memory. Is "slim" expecting some ".slim/hidden\_file" script file to execute durring login. Maybe like .xinitrc which contains a single line "exec mate-session" what about login as root first. then "su new\_user\_name" to check what contents of files are as in directory /home/new\_user\_name whoami ls -la du -h cat .xinitrc ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jvar0131 · 2022-08-23 21:37 \#nano .xinitrc \#exec mate-session \#reboot in setup time you didnt logout from root ,, you must logout first , an run the commands as user. so 1.login as root in mate 2.open terminal 3.login as user 4. create .xinitrc reboot ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-09-01 07:53 > try creating a new user, From the opening post: >> I tried to add a user with "adduser" and if I do a "cat /etc/passwd" then the new user is there in the bottom of the list.
