Install FreeBSD directly onto a mounted disk. reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kryptovalutorwiki · 2022-08-17 14:42 Since "winter is coming" here in europe with inhumane electricity prices i need to install FreeBSD onto a very slimmed down device with only a sata port with no ability install from USB/CD. I also dont have and dont need USB/CD for anything but this therefore making the best solution to create a ready to boot drive directly. So i need to create a boot ready harddrive onto a harddisk that i mount to my current computer. Is there any guides on how to do this? I guess the hardest part is to format the disk correctly and make it bootable. The easy part should be to just copy over the OS content from an .iso image, which is what happens when installed from a CD pretty much? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ShelLuser42 · 2022-08-17 15:14 Fire up the computer with the FreeBSD install cd or DVD, then check if it recognizes the HD. If so then this won't be much different from a regular installation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-08-17 15:48 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-08-17 18:32 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- akapulko53 · 2022-08-18 02:48 If your device has an x86|amd64 CPU, then you can write rescue MfsBSD to a sata drive. And then, after booting MfsBSD, install FreeBSD. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kryptovalutorwiki · 2022-08-18 14:13 going to look into that. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kryptovalutorwiki · 2022-08-18 14:38 don't have a cd or dvd or a reader for either. have not had one for years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mj_turner · 2022-08-20 08:55 Seconded. I've had good luck using [mfsBSD](https://mfsbsd.vx.sk) and using it to install on hosted servers. Just be aware of the security risks during the initial boot period (known root password, etc). Once booted, use `zfsinstall` to install. BTW, make sure you write the 'memstick' image to the unpartitioned disk - that works best for me. A related option is [depenguin](https://depenguin.me).
