How to use two monitors at the same time while I'm using FreeBSD. reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 08:55 Hello to everyone. Actually I have two monitors, but usually I use only one of them. The screen I use everyday with FreeBSD is attached to the HDMI port of the "**VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation CoffeeLake-S GT2 \[UHD Graphics 630\] (rev 02)**" graphic chipset. And it works well. Sometimes, when I want to virtualize Linux,I attach the second monitor to the HDMI port of the second GPU I have, the **Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 ti** and in this way I can use even the second. But,what about to use it without to boot another OS ? This idea came to my mind from some time and I would like to gather some suggestions to understand how can I do this. I find very useful to drag and drop, with a proper tool, files and folders from the monitor 1 to the 2,like I do in Windows and Linux. But I have no idea about how to do it in FreeBSD. It could be useful even when I want to make some 3d modelling using Blender on the first and using the second to watch some tutorial. I want to keep using the intel driver of my **VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation CoffeeLake-S GT2 \[UHD Graphics 630\] (rev 02)**" graphic chipset. Has Intel a similar tool like the NVidia Settings ? I ask this because I use a lot of virtual machines,so I haven't installed the nvidia driver on the system at all, because I don't need it. In my scenario is the linux guest vm that needs the installation of the nvidia driver, not FreeBSD. If I can do it using the Intel graphic chipset software or any other tool that at the moment I don't know at all,I will be not obliged to installl and deinstall the nvidia driver every time I want to use the multimonitor. Can someone give me some suggestions about some method, tecnique and tools to achieve this goal ? very thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-07-18 10:20 https://www.freshports.org/x11/arandr/ ? But both monitors would have to be connected to GPU that you have driver for. It will not work if one monitor is connected to nvidia gpu using ppt driver for bhyve ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-07-18 11:07 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 11:23 Should I install the nvidia driver ? But it does not interfere with the driver (intel) that I'm using for the main monitor ? and it will interfere with the linux vm that I will boot in bhyve ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 11:42 I have removed the ppt driver for bhyve, but arandr does not recognize the second monitor. And yes,I have installed the nvidia- driver-510.60.02 on FreeBSD. Between the menu I don't see the nvidia utilities that are, instead, installed by the linux driver. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-07-18 11:49 Your post is quite chaotic, so I don't quite understand what you are doing. If nvidia gpu is using ppt driver for bhyve, then no. Where do you want to connect each monitor? If you want to connect both to intel gpu, then you don't need nvidia driver. If you want to connect one to intel gpu, one to nvidia gpu, then you need nvidia driver. But then you won't be able to passthru nvidia gpu to VM. And you'll probably need to manually edit xorg.conf to recognize that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 11:56 I can't connect two monitors on the intel GPU,because I have only one HDMI port for that GPU. Ohhh ok. I can try what happens if I do : X -configure. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-07-18 12:21 if you have displayport and hdmi in integrated gpu, you can use displayport to hdmi cable. Or connect both monitors to nvidia gpu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 12:37 The Intel integrated gpu has only one HDMI port. To attach two monitors on two nvidia gpu ports is very unconfortable for me,because I use the bhyve virtual machines very often. And if I want to do that,I should reboot the PC. Anyway this is the scenario : https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/pHNTYGBs33/ I think I need some splitter that allows me to attach two monitors on the intel hdmi port. Can u suggest to me the right product to buy ? thanks. (it should not be expensive,I'm poor). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-07-18 12:45 > To attach two monitors on two nvidia gpu ports is very unconfortable for me,because I use the bhyve virtual machines very often. And if I want to do that,I should reboot the PC But you will have to reboot anyway if you want to switch from nvidia driver to ppt driver Anyway, what about those links that can be found in google? https://vadosware.io/post/using-both-integrated-and-discrete-graphics- cards/ https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/118110/dual-monitors- with-2-videos-driver-with-xrandr-1-4 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 12:48 > But you will have to reboot anyway if you want to switch from nvidia driver to ppt driver I know, infact my next question would have been " how to switch from nvidia driver to ppt driver and viceversa without rebooting " :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 12:53 as I'd suspected : xrandr --listproviders Providers: number : 1 Provider 0: id: 0x43 cap: 0xb, Source Output, Sink Output, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 1 associated providers: 0 name:Intel even if in the xorg.conf I have configured both the gpus, as you can see on the ubuntupastebin link that I have provided. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-07-18 13:01 You can't. It's possible on linux with igb-based network cards (the card just disappears from host when guest starts), but igb-based cards support SR-IOV and are overall virtualization-friendly. GPUs and GPU drivers are too complicated for that. And that's without even considering nvidia doing nvidia things (like error code 43) Your best bet in this case would probably be gpu virtualization, but you need datacenter-grade gpu for that that cost datacenter-grade money. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/data-center/virtual-solutions/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 13:07 I'm sure we can. Corvin explained how to do it some time ago,but I forgot. He told that the method is less known, but it can be done. Point is that I can't read all the messages exchanged with him, they are really too much. So,I have asked to him again. Let's see. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-07-18 13:14 This is how : devctl detach pci0:b:d:f devctl set driver pci0:b:d:f ppt bhyve -s x,passthru,b/d/f shutdown VM devctl detach pci0:b:d:f devctl set driver pci0:b:d:f vgapci
