How to run bhyve and virtualbox at the same time.... reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-06-26 14:01 Hello to everyone. Just for educational purposes I've virtualized MacOS Monterey with Virtualbox in FreeBSD : https://preview.redd.it/v4ohkkj02z791.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto= webp&s=b9dd015aa7cc6085fdd2510f3c72ea900c1cd303 Now,the problem is that Virtualbox supports only USB 1.0 speed devices because it does not support the USB 3.0/3.1 plugin/addon and since I use a lot of USB disks and I transfer data between them,I can't have a low level speed like that. So,I've thought of some ideas to overcome the problem. My idea is to use a tool called USB over IP,sharing the USB disks I have from an OS that can mount them to the MacOS that / which can't. At the beginning my idea was to install the server part on a bhyve virtual machine, let's say for example Linux or Windows. **But I've soon realized that I can't run both bhyve and VirtualBOX at the same time.** So,I'm here to ask you if you know some patch, tricks, wrapper and so on,to be able to do that. If that can't be done,I'm forced to install the USB-IP server on FreeBSD itself and the client on MacOS,but this makes the task more complicated to accomplish. Even though there is no known USB over IP tool which can run natively on FreeBSD. For example I tried this one : [www.virtualhere.com](http://www.virtualhere.com/) I  tried to install it with the linuxulator and natively and I've got the same output. Surprisingly it started, but unfortunately it reported another error, telling that it can't find an IP protocol to communicate with the client : mario@marietto:/home/mario# ./vhusbdx86_64 VirtualHere USB Server is running...press CTRL-C to stop setsockopt - IP_PKTINFO: Protocol not available I wanted to explore what could be done to fix this bug and I've opened a bug report here : [https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show\_bug.cgi?id=264835](https://bu gs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=264835) Later,I've got an email that pointed me here : [https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show\_bug.cgi?id=264865](https://bu gs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=264865) as you can read, someone replied, telling : >Here is an example of use: > >[https://github.com/jacktrip/jacktrip/blob/main/src/UdpDataProtocol.c pp#L297](https://github.com/jacktrip/jacktrip/blob/main/src/UdpDataPro tocol.cpp#L297) I don't understand if he is talking about the "bug" that we are talking about at the beginning. I mean this : [https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show\_bug.cgi?id=264835](https://bu gs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=264835) because I'm not a programmer so I don't see which correlation there is between the two bug reports.Furthermore I don't have any **UdpDataProtocol.cpp file** on my **FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE** system. So,I don't know what to do now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-06-26 16:01 > UdpDataProtocol.cpp Please see | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-06-26 16:35 yes, thanks,I've read it,but the answer that I've got has not been useful. It also seems to be incomplete. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-06-26 16:51 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-06-26 17:14 Did u remove your ironic answer ? Anyway it made me laugh. You changed the subject line to reflect the answer that has been given. Did u realize that's not a good behavior ? The question that I wrote wants to explore more solutions in one only post. It's not good that you restrict the title to one only. Even because doing like this you force me to make another question to look for different answers. Do you like this behavior ? If the question will be the same,I could be accused by doing spam. But It's not spam, that's only because the replies that I wanted on my starting question have been restricted and I've been forced to make some "spam" :D it's only your fault, not mine :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-06-27 07:30 Why don't you just pass disk as block device, instead as usb device? https://ahelpme.com/software/virtualbox/add-a-raw-disk-to-a- virtualbox-virtual-machine/ linux instructions should work for freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-06-27 11:13 worked, thanks. But the real problem is that when I need to virtualize MacOS with virtualbox,I can't virtualize any other os with bhyve. And to use virtualbox as default instead of bhyve is not a good idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2022-06-27 11:27 Unfortunately I don't know any way to use bhyve and virtualbox at the same time. There's probably not many developers interested in fixing that bug ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loziomario · 2022-06-27 11:45 exactly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-06-27 18:53 Interesting, thanks.
