Does FreeBSD not work with libgfxinit? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-16 15:34 I'm somewhat new to BSD and not really used to troubleshooting these kinds of problems on this platform so please forgive me if this issue is trivial. I'm trying to install on a T60, coreboot w/ seabios and libgfxinit linear highres framebuffer for display. Freebsd does not start, at all. It prints 'booting from hard drive' with two newlines and then the display freezes forever. The installer will start in VGA textmode but I can't really change between these on the fly as it's handled at compile-time and to my knowledge freebsd won't be able to initialize graphics on its own. Does anyone have any experience with this and can point me towards what to troubleshoot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vivekkhera · 2022-06-16 19:47 What’s a T60? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-16 19:49 Lenovo ThinkPad T60. Popular laptop model. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justmike80386 · 2022-06-17 00:34 I've had the same issue with coreboot/FreeBSD when the display is glitchy/misbehaving (a WIP coreboot build). The system freezes at the bootloader instead of continuing blind/headless. Other bootloaders seem fine continuing blind. I haven't tested the linear frame buffer on a working setup. I've had no issues booting FreeBSD in coreboot using VGA text mode or using a VGABIOS. Are you including the generic seavgabios? I'm not too clear on how this cooperates with the coreboot display settings, but people have suggested that it may be required. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-17 01:12 I'm using the vgabios that comes with seabios, yes. I have not (and will not, on ethical grounds) included the proprietary ROM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- justmike80386 · 2022-06-17 04:53 I think you can boot in text mode and then let OS drivers kick in after boot (vt, x, or wl), not sure though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-17 14:09 Also of note is that it boots in VGA textmode but it's glitchy to say the least. Incorrect colors, flashing, the boot text is cut off on the 1/4th of the screen and then it reappears at the top... I'm going to just brute force through it for the install process and see if I can fix it on a working system. Edit: got it to give me a framebuffer during boot with the proper graphics drivers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-06-17 16:37 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-06-17 16:43 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-06-17 17:53 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-06-18 18:24 Which installer, exactly? The full name of the file, please. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-18 18:37 I went around the issue by setting it to VGA textmode and having i935 (or whatever the intelgpu driver is called) load on boot, even though it breaks compatibility with some other OSs. But it's FreeBSD-13.1-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-06-18 18:48 Thanks, > FreeBSD-13.1-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img 𣀓– that's interesting, because at the **T60** (distinct from T60P) is 32-bit for /u/RiemannRoch ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KasaneTeto_ · 2022-06-18 18:53 It took both Core (x86) and Core 2 (x86_64) CPUs on socket-M. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-06-18 19:27 Thanks for explaining.
