Celebrating 50 years of the UNIX Operating system reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ptkrisada · 2022-04-16 08:03 You can try variants of legacy Unix at [unix50](http://unix50.org). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xzenor · 2022-04-16 08:37 This I gotta try. Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- devenblake · 2022-04-16 09:11 There's no need to make the same post in four different BSD-related subreddits (this, r/NetBSD, r/AdvanceBSD, and r/BSD). Especially when this is neither new (as far as I can tell) nor strictly relevant to BSD derivatives (it may be relevant to r/BSD because the site mentions how to connect to historic BSD releases). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 10:28 Thanks, however – for the future – please know that it's better to post a link *as* a link. (Not a text post with a link in the midst of text.) Proper use of link posts helps to identify duplicate and related discussions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 10:32 > … the same post in four … /u/ptkrisada if you'd like the same item in multiple subreddits, please use the **crosspost** feature that's integral to Reddit. This helps people to read each other's comments across the subs. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ptkrisada · 2022-04-16 10:38 Alright, I will **never** again. I don't know the difference between **multiple posts** and **crosspost**, sorry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ptkrisada · 2022-04-16 10:44 Sorry, this may disturb you. But I don't understand what you are explaining. I always post in markdown mode. I have just been active in reddit for 3-4 months. I think that next time I shall do **crosspost**. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 10:48 Thanks, > … the difference between multiple posts and crosspost. An example, an original post: * https://www.reddit.com/r/BSD/comments/teshnj/eurobsdcon_2022_cfp_is_ open/ – you'll see: * *other discussions (1)* – a prominent tab in old Reddit; or * *View discussions in 1 other community* – less obviously, below the comment field in new Reddit. If you want to cross-post something, either: 1. click **crosspost** (old Reddit); or 2. use the **Share** menu (new Reddit). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 11:09 > … I have just been active in reddit for 3-4 months. … :-) it took *years* for me to discover some features. An example of a link post: * – the opening post is, essentially, nothing more than a link to a topic in FreeBSD Forums. A link alone, but it was popular. It is, coincidentally, also an example of something that was cross- posted; the discussion in "1 other community". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 11:36 +1 Some fun to be had! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- klikklakvege · 2022-04-16 12:09 Paragraphs and linebreaks don't work in my Android Reddit app. And i also get often remarks here why i don't use paragraphs and that i have to!! I lived half of my life in Germany where the whole society is used to go always "according to the rules" since generations. You can't even ride your bicycle where you want - immediately some old grandma will call you an "arschloch" because you ride your bike not on the right lane and not according to the rules!! Reddit is international, so there are also here many people from countries/cultures where everybody has to go "with the rules". So remember, use the cross post feature of reddit otherwise someone from Switzerland/Holland/germany will call the police, Stasi and Gestapo :))) I got used to comments like that and mostly ignore them. All i think then is "thank God i am not like these people and don't have a problem with everything". 50 years Unix is a fantastic anniversary! Recently was 50th anniversary of my parents marriage. I'm happy that my parents are still with me and I'm also happy that we still have Unix around. Just imagine we all would have to use Windows! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-16 16:23 > … some old grandma will call you an "arschloch" because … Oh, there's an element of that in the UK, too, and it's not limited to the elderly. Out of town, a friend and I once walked across grass in a public area surrounded by a high fence, with our bicycles *on our shoulders*. Someone ran across from the far side of the field, shouting frantically: "Get off your bike! You! YOU! **GET OFF YOUR BIKE!**" My friend and I continued walking, with our bicycles still *on our shoulders*, and laughed. I don't know what the high fence was for, but there sure was something uptight about that community. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PkHolm · 2022-04-16 23:08 Yeh. Power of UNIX. I started First Ediditon of UNIX which is couple of years older than me. And I can use it, without reading any manuals. It bit hard, bloody **ed**. But it is usable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-04-17 13:32 Hey, I stumbled across something that appears to be a year old (2021-03-20, updated) but was first [captured in the Wayback Machine]( https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en- us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette) in 2015: * [Reddiquette – Reddit Help](https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en- us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette) A couple of mentions of cross posting, like "consider cross posting if the contents fits more communities", but there's nothing explicit about using the 'crosspost' *feature* (with or without the 'Share' menu). ---- Still, I suspect that it *is* good to use the feature, I suspect that the feature does help with awareness, as pictured below: [screenshot](https://i.imgur.com/OZn5NIn.png) * old Reddit in the window to the left * new Reddit to the right. ---- Apologies for going off-topic from UNIX … if we have any more questions about Reddit itself, /r/help might be the best place :-)
