New FreeBSD 13 install stuck at 'Booting from Hard Disk...' in GNOME Boxes on Linux. reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-07 15:46 Hi. I just installed from the FreeBSD-13.0-RELEASE-amd64-dvd1.iso file. I just installed it and rebooted. This shows: https://preview.redd.it/x3rspi1amfg81.png?width=966&format=png&auto=we bp&s=10ac8948868906fc04d2d7feb7ee8982bb620719 Does anyone know a fix? Thanks. Edit: Using 'GPT (UEFI)' in the ZFS config section caused the system to hang when installed and rebooted. Instead I chose 'GPT (BIOS)'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- socphoenix · 2022-02-07 16:34 It looks like it’s failing to find a boot loader that’s the bios screen. I’d recommend checking that it’s set to boot from the correct hard drive, if so then you might need to try reinstalling. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-07 17:18 I don't see any options in GNOME Boxes to select boot options. I'll try installing in [virt-man](https://virt-manager.org/). Update: I'm having the exact same issue in virt-man. 😕 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pramsky · 2022-02-07 18:05 What is the host CPU and what is the CPU specified for the freebsd guest ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-07 18:31 Sorry, can you elaborate on that? How can I find that info? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-07 18:39 At the ZFS Configuration section, I chose "Pool Type/Disks = stripe: 1 disk". Should I have left that at the default setting? I also changed GPT to use UEFI. Perhaps that's the cause? Edit: Actually, it seems that the stripe setting must be changed to proceed. Update: I tried again in GNOME Boxes. The UEFI setting must have been the cause. I've just logged in as normal user. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pramsky · 2022-02-07 19:20 EDIT: NM, Looks like you got it figured out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- socphoenix · 2022-02-07 20:07 Are you setting it up with bios or uefi? How long is I hanging there before you reset it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-02-08 07:24 > Update: I tried again in GNOME Boxes. The UEFI setting must have been the cause. If you like, change your post from *help wanted* to *answered*; edit your opening post to include a link to your update about UEFI. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-08 13:49 My main PC uses UEFI so I thought I could use 'GPT (UEFI)' in the ZFS config section. It hung for ages. I reinstalled and changed to 'GPT (BIOS)' and there was no hanging. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-08 13:50 Thanks, will do. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Royaourt · 2022-02-08 13:50 NP :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- socphoenix · 2022-02-08 17:25 Gotcha I probably won’t have free time till tomorrow but I’ll see if I can figure out why. My FreeBSD file server runs on virtual-manager/kvm but I’ve only ever used the bios mode for it. Edit: this was using arch linux I don’t think there should be a difference between distros but just in case. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- socphoenix · 2022-02-09 19:17 I think I see the issue. Booting from uefi with chipset 1440x and “ovmf_code.fd” caused a hand on my end. Setting chipset to Q35 allowed for install and boot using uefi without issue.
