How can I install FreeBSD 14-CURRENT from a 13-RELEASE? reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DotaOnFreeBSD · 2022-01-08 13:32 You talking about upgrading? If that's the case I would compile it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolHwhipMike · 2022-01-08 14:19 Use the [handbook](https://docs.freebsd.org/en/books/handbook/cutting- edge/) to see how to update from source. However, since current is for development I would use bectl to make a zfs snapshot so you can rollback if something is broken. Edit - freebsd-update only work for release upgrades. To go to stable or current you either need a new img or compile from source. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vladivakh · 2022-01-08 14:27 I don't understand which GitHub repo I should clone! Can you give me the GitHub link to clone the CURRENT? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolHwhipMike · 2022-01-08 14:37 Use the link I sent and search for "obtaining source" or similar. It's in a table near the bottom of the page - if you're on mobile the formatting will be messed up. Use releng for release branch, stable for the stable branch, or main for the current branch. There you will find step by step instructions. However, you might not have a good time unless you read the handbook a little bit. Current is for development and can sometimes have breaking changes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-08 18:29 FreeBSD 14.0-CURRENT HERE. It's from (2021-11-10) The routine for an in-place upgrade from releng/13.0 should be no different from the routine for an in-place upgrade from stable/13. From your [post about surf](https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/ rn50w4/cant_compile_surf_browser/), I assume that you use a desktop environment. If so, a hint: don't attempt an upgrade of this type whilst using the desktop environment. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2022-01-08 20:11 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2022-01-08 20:12 Since the comments Here are Not very helpful, Here is my procedure: 1. cd /usr/ 2. git clone -b main --depth 1 https://git.freebsd.org/src.git 3. cd src 4. make -j buildworld buildkernel 5. make installkernel 6. mergemaster -p 7. make installworld 8. mergemaster -a 9. cp -va /var/tmp/temproot/. /. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-09 00:27 You can certainly try, it will certainly fail :-) Less flippantly: * you can run the command, for yourself, without fear * `freebsd-update -r 14.0-CURRENT upgrade` * the failure will be harmless, and will demonstrate why the attempt is invalid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-09 00:29 > Since the comments Here are Not very helpful, Er, thank you. > my procedure: … `git clone -b main --depth 1 https://git.freebsd.org/src.git` Please, **don't**; see Also, its not ideal to promote a method (mergemaster) that's [on its way out](https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/commit/UPDATING?id=e641c29a006ae 9f528f196386052355b42a53d75). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2022-01-09 02:18 RTFM comments are Not very helpful, would've been easier to Tell OP exactly what commands to use than to have them search through the updating from source Manuals. Okay then skip the --depth Part. It was Just what I was using, No guarantee it was the right way. I know mergemaster is on its way Out and quite frankly don't get why. It does what it needs to do Just fine. It seems nowadays they do some Things Like the Linux devs that crippled ifconfig there and artificially deprecated net-tools altogether. I've Heard etcupdate is the replacement, but I don't know what it does or how it works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-09 08:29 > RTFM comments are Not very helpful, Generally true, and I didn't direct readers towards the FreeBSD Handbook, (someone else already had), **however**: * for a newcomer to have some likelihood of success with building and installing from source, it's **essential** to at least be aware of the relevant part of the handbook. /u/CoolHwhipMike was not only first in, [he is spot-on](https://old.re ddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/ryzqzt/how_can_i_install_freebsd_14current _from_a/hrs25nh/). Relevant changes to UPDATING (the chunk that is short and sweet) were reviewed by ceri, approved by philip and imp – **imp *really* knows his stuff**, and cares about good documentation. It's true that footnotes are disorderly i.e. 9–6: * [⚙ D29934 Reorder commented steps in UPDATING following sequential order.](https://reviews.freebsd.org/D29934) *Needs Review* – but the steps are orderly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-09 08:40 > … formatting will be messed up. … Something like this? https://forums.freebsd.org/attachments/1641717393305-png.12560/ Cross-reference ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2022-01-09 09:57 Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolHwhipMike · 2022-01-09 13:42 Yep, exactly like that. I think the site looks pretty good but has some tweaks that could be done, like discussed on the forums. I like the cross references - helps show more of the story. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-09 18:18 … sorry if I'm somewhat pushy about things such as this, don't take it personally. The git thing is a bit of an odd one, I read many months ago about the intention to *update the mini-git primer* (words to that effect), wondered where the update might be – it's **not** in any of the prominent mini-primers with which I'm familiar. I was surprised to find the update, a few hours ago, in the FreeBSD Handbook because I so rarely use this book as reading material for myself. I think of it as a **maxi** resource, with few aspects that are miniature! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2022-01-09 18:19 Thanks for the followup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2022-01-13 21:11 Would it be possible to use an install usb with 14 on it and just copy over the files (basically an install without the formatting) ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2022-01-13 21:31 > Would it be possible to use an install usb with 14 on it and just copy over the files (basically an install without the formatting) ? A lovely idea, however things are not so simple. /u/chrisfrompatra might help to explain. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xerxero · 2022-01-13 21:55 Isn’t that the power of having /usr/local ? Boot the usb, copy the files, boot the new system and reinstall all packages Make installworld does the same things if memory serves
