Mounting a samba network drive reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uniteduniverse · 2021-12-13 06:42 I need help mounting a windows samba network drive on my freebsd machine. I tried using the recommended "mount\_smbfs //user@domain/mountpoint", but to no avail. I can ping the ip address and domain name of the computer that I want to mount on the freebsd machine, and I can also mount the windows samba drive on any other windows or Linux computer that I also have, just not the freebsd one. What am I doing wrong? the error message I receive is "mount\_smbfs: unable to open connection: syserr = Connection reset by peer". Any help would be appreciated. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyrelk · 2021-12-13 07:36 What I'm doing for this is something like the following: In /etc/fstab: //user@smbserver/mount /mnt/smbserver/mount smbfs rw,noauto,-N,-u=YOUR-USER-ID,-g=YOUR-USER-GROUP 0 0 in /etc/nsmb.conf [default] workgroup=YOUR-DOMAIN [SMBSERVER] charsets=utf8:cp850 # optional [SMBSERVER:user] password=YOUR-PASSWORD Hope that helps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDROID_16 · 2021-12-13 07:39 You're going to be disappointed but the mount_smbfs tool only supports SMB1. See the STANDARDS section on the manpage entry https://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?mount_smbfs(8) You'll have to use a fuse way to do it but it comes with a performance penalty. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2021-12-13 09:02 Check this: \- [https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2018/12/27/smb-cifs-on- freebsd/](https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2018/12/27/smb-cifs-on- freebsd/) But keep in mind that FreeBSD currently is able to mount only SMBv1 shares. You can 'serve' SMBv2 and SMBv3 with Samba from FreeBSD tho. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uniteduniverse · 2021-12-13 09:59 Thanks for the info. How exactly do I use a fuse to get it working and how bad will the performance hit actually be? Also why has Freebsd not implemented smb v2 or v3 in to the system yet? Most operating systems theses days allow it out of necessity, so I'm not quite sure what the freebsd team is doing. I've read many stories online about how people are having a hard time getting samba mounts to work correctly on freebsd, so the need for it does exist. No hate or anything, I'm just trying to understand the freebsd teams mindset on this issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uniteduniverse · 2021-12-13 10:02 I did tried your fix, but it didn't do anything when I used mount -a or even when I rebooted my computer, I'm not sure why? Thanks for trying though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ANDROID_16 · 2021-12-13 10:44 Try this https://www.freshports.org/sysutils/fusefs-smbnetfs/ As to the why, I really don't know. I'm sure if you search here or on the forums there would be an explanation somewhere but my guess is it ultimately comes down to developer resources and priorities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyrelk · 2021-12-17 08:20 FreeBSD smb client supports only SMB1 , be sure that your server is able to use this version of the protocol. It may be disable by default. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- uniteduniverse · 2021-12-17 08:24 I enabled smb1 within windows PowerShell, but I'm still having issues connecting for some reason. The whole thing just seems to be a big mess. I'm guessing FreeBSD's main priorities are server oriented and not clients. And that's probably the reason they haven't implemented SMB2 or SMB3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cyrelk · 2021-12-17 18:31 Stupid question , but do you have a FW setup on your client machine? If this the case let's try without it activated and see what happens. SMB has a number of protocols used.
