Boot Configuration/Approach options for MultiOS reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RandomXUsr · 2021-11-02 14:49 I've got a removable drive tray with a spinning rust drive, and two nvme w/ enclosures. I'd like to install Linux/Windows/BSD in a multiboot configuration, on a single drive. What options or approaches are available? Let me know even the bad choices. I'm thinking of either doing triple boot with Grub or Possibly a Single UEFI image for Linux and BSD. (is that possible with BSD?) Is it possible to load a UEFI image with BSD? Or will I need to use grub? I'm not familiar with the bootloader for BSD. Please offer any and all options, even if they may not be the best choice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- c1rala · 2021-11-02 15:34 I use refind to manage a multi OS setup, which supports most systems except openbsd. http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-11-02 16:58 I'd go with rEFInd. It can auto-detect installed operating systems and add them to menu. I had linux with refind on nvme in my laptop, and freebsd on external hard drive. When i started laptop with external hdd plugged in, refind detected freebsd there, and added it to menu. Also, it does not boot freebsd directly, but rather than boots freebsd bootloader, which then boots freebsd, so you still can add things to /boot/loader.conf I assume it boots windows in the same way ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-11-02 23:57 Where does rEFInd write the boot menu? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-11-02 23:59 You can manually add entries in /boot/refind.conf or something like that, but the auto-generated ones are not stored anywhere. On next boot they are auto-generated again, if that's what you ask for ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-11-03 00:54 I guess I dont understand where rEFInd runs from - its on the boot sector of your HD right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-11-03 01:10 rEFInd is installed just like grub in UEFI mode, to something like /boot/efi/BOOT/bootx86.efi, and then you need to point to it in UEFI settings. Or in some cases package installing refind can tell uefi where to look for it, since you can modify some uefi settings from OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-11-03 01:21 cool thanks
