I'm impressed reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-05 19:22 Nothing much to say here except a few anecdotes. Context: I used to use freebsd about 20 years ago and decided it'd be very interesting to give it a whirl again.. been a fan of UNIX in general since the late 90s, Linux still my daily driver. So I whipped out a spare laptop (Huawei matebook pro X 2019) and favour l have it a spin. Having been a hardcore fan of ZFS since it's release on Solaris I was very happy to see gel encryption wiring not just out of the box but to have ZFS as default pleased me. I had to load some drivers for my wi-fi and video.. worked Installed gnome-shell + xfce + i3gaps, all worked ok. Gnome a little old but meh.. Brightness keys, just worked One screen resolution mode missing (just like on Linux, no Biggie, xrandr worked) Alacritty and several important things such as neovim were available and installed nicely. S3 suspend just worked although haven't figured out hibernation (but I never use it anyway) So next things for me to figure out is really daily driver stuff, zoom, slack, discord, gitkraken, some variant of goland, golang and docker (or ideally containerd), Wayland? Screen sharing.. ugh I'm not sure I can make it my daily driver yet/ever but I'm impressed with the state of freebsd right now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vermaden · 2021-10-05 20:37 Hi, these two should help you with your Zoom/Slack and others questions: \- [https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/05/26/freebsd-desktop- part-26-configuration-conferencing-and- meetings/](https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/05/26/freebsd-desktop- part-26-configuration-conferencing-and-meetings/) \- [https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/freebsd-desktop- part-27-configuration-netflix-signal- telegram/](https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/freebsd-desktop- part-27-configuration-netflix-signal-telegram/) You may also check other parts of these *FreeBSD Desktop* series but as I can see you already figured things for yourself. Docker on FreeBSD is a 'no go'. Use FreeBSD Jails with or without BastilleBSD or install Linux in Bhyve/VirtualBox VM for 'real' Docker. There is **runj** for FreeBSD Jails also available: \- [https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/freebsd-desktop- part-27-configuration-netflix-signal- telegram/](https://vermaden.wordpress.com/2021/09/06/freebsd-desktop- part-27-configuration-netflix-signal-telegram/) About Slack or Discord you can use them by browser but I suspect that their 'fat' clients may work the same way as Signal or Netflix by using the Ubuntu/Linux Compat Layer. Regards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2021-10-05 20:38 There is jail instead of docker i think ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-10-05 20:50 Jail is more like LXC than like docker ---------------------------------------------------------------------- outzider · 2021-10-05 22:51 The docker-engine port works if you don't mind using Docker like it works on macOS or Windows. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-06 01:25 Ohh that's interesting, I'll have a look at it's source code soon. Curious to see how it implements port forwarding (hoping it's not userland like the old days) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-06 01:31 Thanks for that, jails were a thing back in the early 00s (as were Solaris zones). What I mean is, I know about them already thanks I don't particularly need docker, it's just to test certain builds or whatever, examine containers etc.. Bau for a cloud engineer/DevOps alas... Sad thing is we stopped using docker itself in k8s something like 5 years ago, it's just taking much longer than I'd like for better alternatives to take over the desktop lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-06 01:41 Ooh that compat layer looks pretty interesting I'm deffo curious to play with it.. it's got me thinking about a way to effectively package manage multiple layers in a flatpak kinda way now You are correct ofc, the bulk of these things are just Chrome+webapp built in electron I'm not looking forward to tackling zoom (it barely works on Linux lol) but I suppose running it in a browser is acceptable if it's able to screenshare ---------------------------------------------------------------------- goldfluss · 2021-10-07 11:11 Thanks for your reply and sorry for my limited knowledge … ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rykolepl · 2021-10-07 11:17 don't worry, your knowledge just got better :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-10-09 17:03 > haven't figured out hibernation tl;dr it's not supported. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-10-09 17:06 > Wayland? Maybe of interest (I haven't followed the most recent progress): * [KDE & Wayland | The FreeBSD Forums](https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/kde-wayland.80167/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-09 17:41 Ye, not a feature I have really ever used tbh ---------------------------------------------------------------------- distark · 2021-10-09 17:45 Thanks, I spent some time playing with wayland today actually, didn't spot this but I'm ok with kde these days
