Welp, I was finally able to install FreeBSD reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-03 22:39 Good job. Looks great You may want to do an update, for the security patches su - freebsd-update fetch freebsd-update install \_ \_\_\_\_\_ \_ root@viviane / \\\` \`/ \\ OS: FreeBSD 13.0-RELEASE-p4 \\/ (\_\_/ KERNEL: GENERIC 1300139 | | UPTIME: 31 mins | | PACKAGES: 517 \\ / SHELL: bash \`-\_\_\_\_\_-\` UI: unknown ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-03 22:42 I was finally able to install FreeBSD. Previously I was unable to install it properly as enabling the Nvidia driver would make it unbootable. Since then, I have found a workaround in the internet, so now I was able to boot into it. I have spent all day configuring things today and also spent a few hours on it yesterday. Finally I have a desktop like this with functional sound and a basically functional system. I was also able to install Steam through Homura, although the Steam UI is very much broken and the resolution of games is janky. Regardless, I was able to install CLANNAD along with Quake 2 (Quake 1 requires 64 bit for some absurd reason, whereas Quake 2 does not). One benefit over Linux here is that I can effectively run Firefox. In all Linux distros I have ever used Firefox has had huge tearing problems. On FreeBSD it's far less bad. Moving windows has a bit more tearing than Linux, though. Besides that, the biggest disadvantage over Linux seems to be gaming as that is quite a bit worse. Well, I do now have some Steam game ability combined with SuperTuxCart and other FOSS titles, so I might be ok. Currently dual booting with my Gentoo as I have not committed to fully moving yet, but instead want to see what the experience is like with the ability to go back. My Wacom tablet works without issues, though. Besides that, here's my desktop info: Window Manager: IceWM Theme: Green Ice (I made it based on my previous Dark Ice theme). To get Homura working, I have temporarily just set some mounting commands into my IceWM startup file. I'll need to look at putting it all in my fstab, but this works for now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-03 22:56 Thanks for the headsup about the update stuff, but seems it doesn't have anything to update. I did install it yesterday with the netinstaller, so I guess it's up to date already for now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-03 22:57 I really like what you done with the window manger. Looks great. I been using xfce. I have to try icewm. How did you get it to look so good? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-03 23:01 your running 13 release right now its 13.0-RELEASE-p4 I installed yesterday too. I had to update too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-03 23:01 I made a custom config along with a custom theme to fit the dark look. I used a GTK theme as well to make apps look decent (Adwaita Dark GTK themes tend to go well with my Window Manager themes). You can find my configs and themes and whatnot all linked in my primary details comment. Luckily enough IceWM is relatively easy to modify (making my theme for XFWM was a lot of unnecessary trouble, so I'm very grateful for how easy IceWM makes it). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-03 23:03 It did output some scanning stuff. Doing it again just says there's nothing to update. Guess maybe it did update after all. Edit: Can confirm it did indeed update. The output was unclear about that, but I'm all set now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-03 23:04 Thanks for the info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AxeyEndres · 2021-09-04 00:30 You have to enable vertical synchronization (they also call it tearfree) in your xorg.conf.. In freebsd or linux or whatever.. Your screen tearing will automagically disappear. I think there is a guide in arch Linux wiki somewhere.. Works on freebsd too ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-09-04 00:39 > The output was unclear Things should be less confusing in the future. https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/oug737/-/h733zws/?context=1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-09-04 00:41 > the biggest disadvantage Can you sleep and then wake the system? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 00:42 Honestly I'm fine with it as it is. Just noticed that without enabling any of that, the Linux version of the drivers seems to be more competent at avoiding tearing. It's not something that I would care about in actual use. The fact that I can run Firefox without huge tearing is great, though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 00:43 The thing that was unclear was that the output didn't explicitly state it was installing updates or had installed them. I know what it looks like now, just confused me initially. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 00:56 Can't even sleep properly. That isn't really a disadvantage to me, tho, and my Gentoo install has suspension disabled in the kernel as well anyway. This is on my desktop and I shut it down properly when not in use, so suspension doesn't matter in this case. I would put more focus to figuring it out if I ever end up installing this on my laptop. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- edthesmokebeard · 2021-09-04 01:14 FreeBSD installs in about 10 minutes. What was the problem? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 01:20 There's an issue where following the Handbook with the nvidia drivers would make the system unbootable. I found a workaround online elsewhere and following that fixed the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-09-04 01:27 > Can't even sleep properly. That isn't really a disadvantage to me, … On FreeBSD, the likeliest explanation is presence of storage on e.g. USB. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reddit_original · 2021-09-04 01:44 fwiw, nvidia drivers are a common install and I've been using nvidia graphics cards for a decade or more. There are instructions for that in the Handbook and Nvidia even has FreeBSD specific installation instructions and web pages on their site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 01:47 The problem is that the instructions in the handbook result in an unbootable system in my case (according to a random comment in the internet it has to do with FreeBSD's Nvidia drivers not liking UEFI or something along those lines). Using the approach I found in some forum posts, which is different from the handbook, ended up solving the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MistaPitts · 2021-09-04 02:53 What was the problem and what was the workaround? Somebody with the same issue might websearch their way in here someday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sfarosu2 · 2021-09-04 07:10 Congrats, looks awesome ! I've also tried installing it this week but had not success on my elitebook g7 (intel integrated gpu)...system just hangs while booting the iso right after the FreeBSD menu, probably hardware too new. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2021-09-04 07:38 Very nice . FreeBSD installation is easy , remember to use the europe mirror if you are from europe i see better pkg download speed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- reddit_original · 2021-09-04 08:09 Except I, and many others, are running nvidia on a uefi system so that doesn't make sense. I don't understand the issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- glowiak · 2021-09-04 08:14 Nice. Which WM? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agrajag9 · 2021-09-04 10:33 Can you submit a bug to the doc project at bugs.freebsd.org? They actually try to fix stuff like that to make sure the documentation and implementation all match. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 10:35 IceWM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 10:41 Putting nvidia\_load="YES" into /boot/loader.conf as the wiki states does not work. Instead I had to put kld\_list="nvidia-modeset nvidia" into /etc/rc.conf. Doing the former made the system get stuck at booting, whereas doing the latter works without issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 10:45 Yeah, the compatibility is limited on FreeBSD. I also had a similar issue after enabling the nvidia drivers according to the handbook, but following a different approach fixed that issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 10:45 Just copypasting my other comment: Putting nvidia\_load="YES" into /boot/loader.conf as the wiki states does not work. Instead I had to put kld\_list="nvidia-modeset nvidia" into /etc/rc.conf. Doing the former made the system get stuck at booting, whereas doing the latter works without issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 10:49 Uploading one there now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sfarosu2 · 2021-09-04 10:53 Yes but I don't even have a secondary gpu; one kind of expects integrated graphics to just work...or at least to boot the iso in some form of safe mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 11:06 Yeah, my issue only started after enabling the proprietary drivers using the handbook's approach. I was still able to boot prior to that and whatnot, and I was able to enable the drivers differently and get a working system. For it not to work at all is a bit weird, tho. Regardless, hopefully they will update it to work at some point. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2021-09-04 14:41 Nowadays it's actually Not recommended to put anything in the xorg.xonf File... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AxeyEndres · 2021-09-04 15:36 It's because xorg automatically detects the system, but if you need additional configuration you have to edit the configuration files.. Or use xrandr, but it's not always appropriate ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-04 17:48 Learned something new just now. The manual sleep wouldn't work properly, but automatic sleep does and waking up from that seems to work as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-09-05 00:38 > … elitebook g7 (intel integrated gpu)...system just hangs while booting the iso right after the FreeBSD menu, … Please try the most recent installer for FreeBSD-CURRENT. If the most recent installer for FreeBSD-CURRENT will not boot normally, you can retry with `copy_staging disable`; see for example ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lettuce_field_theory · 2021-09-05 01:15 cool, have fun. I haven't used it in a decade but i remember moving to FreeBSD as my main OS in something like 2008 for a few years. :) just kinda randomly came up my mind so I was curious to check out this subreddit (actually it was earlier than that as i was using 5.x and 6-CURRENT i think) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-05 14:34 That very much depends. In my case I need one for the nvidia drivers to store their display settings in and those automatically generate and use the entire file. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Minute-Load · 2021-09-29 20:23 whats the Ram on fresh boot? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-09-30 07:07 FreeBSD uses quite a bit. I think it's somewhere between 500 mb and a gb and it tends to stick at 1-2 gb after I have used it for a bit. However, it does not leak above that, so I don't consider it to be much of a problem since I have more than enough memory to handle it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terono · 2021-11-09 15:43 Because what you see, your IceWM looks nice, what application for network and battery is used to display your icons in the taskbar configured in the startup file? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-11-09 15:54 The entire setup should work with just IceWM's config the way mine is along with the theme. The graph in the taskbar is just a cpu usage monitor (the other ones wouldn't work on FreeBSD's port of IceWM for some reason), which is built right into IceWM, so it just needs an option toggled in the preferences. There is a battery monitor in IceWM and a Network graph as well if you want to use those (these can be toggled in the preferences file). They work on Linux, although I'm not sure about whether the battery one works on FreeBSD since I have only ever used FreeBSD on my desktop. The network one did not work on my FreeBSD install at least. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terono · 2021-11-09 16:14 And what is the name of the battery pack? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-11-09 17:27 The battery monitor option in the preferences is called TaskBarShowAPMStatus ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terono · 2021-11-10 08:42 Hi Blunders4life, do you have any idea how to create the user folder on the monitor in the window manager ? Thanks for your answers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-11-21 22:26 I'm not sure what you mean. As in a desktop shortcut to the home directory? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terono · 2021-11-25 16:00 >I'm not sure what you mean. As in a desktop shortcut to the home directory? Proceed to create the user's folder icon on the graphical desktop in this case window manager ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Blunders4life · 2021-11-26 12:21 I believe something like lxsession can manage that for you. You can also get some file managers to manage your desktop, such as Nemo. I don't think IceWM has this functionality built in.
