FreeBSD 13 + Gnome3 - User Not Listed? Error reddit / freebsd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2021-08-23 20:03 Hi All, A few months ago I installed FreeBSD 13.0 on my desktop PC (i7-8086) with the Gnome 3 desktop. It is on a machine with a dual boot (since I mainly use Debian). I wanted to learn a bit more about FreeBSD to I booted i back up yesterday and ran the following: `pkg update` `pkg upgrade` I also got tired of typing doas so I edited "/usr/local/etc/doas.conf" to add something like the following: `permit nopass keepenv me as root` This didn't seem to work and I continued to be prompted for a password, even after restarting the terminal. I can't recall any more changes I made to the system but when I rebooted the GDM login manager did not have my username on the screen as normal. Instead it had a message with "user not listed?". When I clicked on this message, I could enter my username and password. On password acceptance, I saw a very brief flash of the Gnome message "something went wrong", then the desktop logged in briefly (such that I could see the desktop background), before crashing back out to the tty login screen. I tried multiple reboots but the same issue occurred. The weird thing is, I can login as root and the Gnome Desktop stays up. I am at a loss to explain why this issue occurred and what will fix it. I have tried running below but the issue is still the same: pkg install -f gnome3 gdm xorg I also noticed at one point in a tty/terminal session that my system hostname was listed as "user@MyRouter". I have no idea what that is about. In the Gnome Desktop my terminal shows "root@free" since I set the hostname to "free" during setup. See below for my rc.conf: `hostname="free"` `keymap="uk.kbd"` `ifconfig_re0="DHCP"` `ifconfig_re0_ipv6="inet6 accept_rtadv"` `# Set dumpdev to "AUTO" to enable crash dumps, "NO" to disable` `dumpdev="NO"` `zfs_enable="YES"` `dbus_enable="YES"` `hald_enable="YES"` `gdm_enable="YES"` `gnome_enable="YES"` `kld_list="i915kms"` I am not dependent on this system and it would be easy for me to just wipe the installation and start from a fresh install but I feel that would mean the following: 1. I did not understand or resolve the issue so it may happen again 2. It dents my confidence in FreeBSD as a stable system, even though the issue could be related to something I did - I just can't recall doing anything "off the beaten track" so to speak. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has any idea. Thanks for taking the time to read! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dezimodnar · 2021-08-23 21:36 you can create a new user to confirm the issue is about the existing non-root user in particular ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CoolHwhipMike · 2021-08-23 22:51 I don't know if this will help you fix your problem but there are some [bugs](https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=256454) with gdm and gnome. I think this post mentions accountservice. I think hald is depricated and I've never had to put it in my rc.conf. And I think gnome_enable will automatically start gdm and possibly dbus but don't quote me on that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-08-24 04:17 > … can't recall any more changes I made to the system … In some situations, `freebsd-update` can cause users to disappear. The workaround, from : pwd_mkdb -p /etc/master.passwd cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf > 13.0 Can you recall which version, specifically, you began with? A pre-release of 13 might have been bugged. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-08-24 04:26 > I think hald is depricated True. https://old.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/ljjq4u/-/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2021-08-24 17:58 Thanks for the tip on hald. I'll get that removed from my rc.conf as a start :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2021-08-24 18:02 Thank you for the information. I wouldn't have guessed or expected a pkg update command to cause users to disappear. Although, I am still not sure exactly what happened in my case, this seems like a pretty serious flaw that will hopefully be addressed. I think I will do a fresh install of FreeSDB 13.0 with Gnome and will keep a very close eye on any commands I issue. Any more problems after that, I'll give good old XFCE a try! :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- grahamperrin · 2021-08-24 18:46 > a pkg update command to cause users to disappear. Not packages; freebsd-update updates the OS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2021-08-24 20:13 Ah, ok. Got it. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- djmex99 · 2021-08-25 18:52 An update on this issue.... [https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/p9a0hv/freebsd\_gnome3\_no\ _systemd/habfs1p?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https: //www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/p9a0hv/freebsd_gnome3_no_systemd/h abfs1p?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) The post above might explain a few things. I initially installed gnome3 a few months ago using "pkg install gnome3" and was wondering why pkg kept telling me that "gnome3" was not found when I tried to force a reinstall recently. When I completed a "pkg update" and "pkg upgrade" the other day, that may indeed be what screwed up my system. I did a quick search and found the post below which indicates some issues with gnome3 and someone suggests using "gnome3-lite" instead. I am not sure if FreeBSD is for me....I don't think I like the idea of packages just breaking during and update/upgrade. I think I'll crawl back to Debian Stable.... :-) [https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/whats-going-on-with- gnome3.81211/](https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/whats-going-on-with- gnome3.81211/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theRealNilz02 · 2021-08-27 13:51 Just don't use Gnome and you'll be fine. KDE looks, feels and works a whole Lot better.
